its a K reg, had it from near new, its done about 120,000 and its starting to show its age a bit, mots are starting to creep up towards the time when it becomes more realistic to look at buying a newer car.

at the moment i'm thinking of either another 106 (as the one i have has never let me down, just starting to show signs of wear and tear), a citreon saxo (as i understand its near enough the same car as a 106 ?), or a vw polo (purely based on vw realaibility, as i see it, might be wrong so feel free to explain the error of my ways).

any other suggestions, looking to spend around £2.5-3K, just started to look around and it seems that should be enough to buy me something decentish.

don't drive any sort of distance very often, mostly short journeys to/from work, shopping etc.

thanks for any advice/suggestions...........

Well I certainly would NOT consider another 106 or a saxo - they are hateful cars and you would enjoy something bigger, more powerful and better built much more. For your budget I personally would look at mk3 mondeos or are you after something smaller?

after something smaller than a mondeo, along the size of the 106.

don't really have use of anything too powerful either, current car is only a 1.0 and don't see any particular reason for too much more, maybe 1.4 as a max.

MkVI Fiesta (pre-facelift) should just about be available for your budget. I used to have a 1.4 Zetec petrol 03 plate and it did the job of reliable shopping trolley very well.

Focus? Big enough to be comfortable, smaller than a mondeo.. They're a damned good car - cheap to run/repair etc.

What's wrong with an old 106? It's deeply unpleasant to drive, for a start.

Evidently not if the owner has had stuck with it for what must be at least 10 years+

And let's not forget that the slightly hotter "Old 106s" (Rallye, XSI, GTI) are regarded even today as some of the purest and best handling hatchbacks of all time.

Have you driven a 106/ Saxo before? What was it you found so unpleasant when driving it?

OP: If you find the Saxo/ 106 ticks all the boxes, an unmolested Saxo Furio/ VTR would be ideal - ~£2.5k should get you a mint example on say a 52, 03, 53 reg. From my experiences with these cars, I would hold out for something low mileage. We've bought 3 low mileage ones (~30k miles) and none have ever been any bother.

My VTR was £155/ year tax, group 7 insurance, 42mpg around town, seen into the 50's on longer runs. Consumables are cheap too, as you probably know. :)

Your aspirations dont seem too high!

If you're not bothered about getting something bigger/better/faster then I dont see the point in changing. Unless it's costing you a fortune to keep on the road, just keep the 106

Fiesta is as good a choice as any, but if you fancy something VAG then perhaps the Seat Ibiza or Skoda Fabia (both Polo based cars)? The Polo tends to demand more money, so you will likely get something a bit older for your budget.

the costs are starting to mount when it comes to mot time, so figure i'll start looking for a replacement.

daft as it may sound i don't really cover the distances to make a something like a bmw worthwhile, even the 1xx series.

cheers for all the info so far.
