hi all

I already had two nice 24" Samsung monitors running from a HD5770. In a moment of weakness I bought a third, a bit extravagant but I kind of like the 'bat cave' look.

I have just discovered that The Ati card can only handle 2 of the 3 monitors running at once. It seems I have 2 options

Buy an active dvi convertor thing to get the display port working on the 5770
or
Another 5770 card.

Are there any major advantages/disadvantyages in the two options?
cheers
Alan

The 5770 supports eyefinity, so will handle the 3 monitors. It will lack in power if you're planning on any gaming with it though.

cheers for that. All my panels are DVI. I think one has to be display port compatable for eyefinity to work. I have got 3rd panel working by throwing in my old x1800 but the system runs like a dog

buy another 5770 and the adapter.

1 5770 wont be powerful enough to play high end games along 3 monitors. 2 Will give to enough for a smooth gameplay but not high FPS.

yea another 5770 look like the answer as it will give more power. I shouldn't need the adaptor as well though will I?, I though I could just plug screen 3 into the new cards DVI port.
thanks

not meaning to hi jack the thread, but can someone running eye infinity in crossfire 5770/5850/5870 (not 5970) confirm that it works and yields performance gains?

last i read it didn't...

on topic, you will need the adapter if you are planning on gaming as you need to run the 3 monitors off one card for eye infinity to work. For just running 3 monitors you can plug them across 2 cards.

i read on one forum you could use a displayport to vga adapter (20quid) in some circumstances instead of buying displayport>dvi (80quid).. probably best googling

you need the adaptor unless you use 2 dvi and 1 HDMI. From my reading/hereing you cant run eye infinity or 3 monitors when 2 are on the first card and other is on the sister (2nd) card. you need to use 2 DVI and 1 HDMi port on the first card

that is wrong

one of the DVI ports is shared with the HDMI you can use either two DVI ports or one DVI and one HDMI not two DVI and HDMI.

even if you get another card you still need to run all monitors off the first graphics card. So yes you will still need the display port adapter.

I can confirm that it is possible to run 3 monitors off 2 cards. I have
1x hd5770 running 2 DVI samsung monitors from the DVI ports
1x (old) X1800 running the 3rd DVI samsung from it's DVI port

I can extend the desktop in windows ok and I could run supreme commander 2with screens 2 playing the game and one running web.

I was thinking if I got another HD5770 to replace the x1800 it should work ok?

I dont think I can use full eyefinity games though but I could be wrong about all of this.

nor will you be able to crossfire them doing that so you essentially have 2 separate cards

if you want to do that you might as well just use the x1800 to run the third screen.

thats great. I have ordered another HD5770 from OCUK and I will try the ebay adaptor. Hopefully I can then use eyefinity

Got the second 5770 and the display port to VGA from ebay
It all works and crossfire can be enabled.
There is one annoying problem though. The 3rd monitor (the display port one) will not auto detect in windows 7. The pc powers up with 2 monitors. I have to go into CCC or display settings and hit detect manually. Not sure why.

just an update on this. I could not get the dongles on AMD's list. I bought the Dell one and it is utter pants. The display drops out all the time or else there are lines like interference. Tried other usb ports etc. Totally Pi$$ed off, bought one from ebay which works a lot better.

Crossfire is your friend :)

hi

yea tried crossfire. Got another 5770, slightly different model of card with 1xDVI and 1xHDMI out. Problem still happens unfortunately. I may try and get a card that has 3x DVI's

My monitors all all samsung 2443's with DVI inputs
