Mountain Bikes

Of these two which would all you bike enthusiasts choose?

Got my Scott Sportster P5 delivered a few days ago. Wanted something to commute on but also go on trails with, seemed ideal. Had a ride last night and it's so much easier than the old MTB ive been using. Very happy with it so far. The P4 you linked has lockout front suspension, so for road use it's even better than mine, boooo! :). If you do end up getting one, get a new saddle while your there, my ass is still sore from yesterday :(.

Your best bet would be to look for bike shops in your area and try to get a go of a few MTBs, Hybrids or even a CX (Cyclocross) if your budget can be stretched, see what takes your fancy.

My Focus road bike for example has a very good frame and full Shimano 105 Groupset whereas the equivalent Specialised only has Tigra or even Tigra/Sora combo.
.

The recession may have something to do with it, but you only need to compare the regular models from the big players to see that this year, not only have prices gone up, but the component spec has gone down. For example the model from Trek I bought last year which is all 105 spec has been dropped to Tigra and is more expensive. Same goes with Specialized models.

The other thing I'd point out about claiming one bikes frame construction is better than another is to bare in mind that cheaper, mass produced bikes for a brand are often made in Chinese factories... You only need to look at someone like Binachi, and their renowned Italian made bikes to see that.

If you are going to be commuting and doing the odd bit of off-road mountain biking, you really don't need disc brakes. The whole advantage of disc brakes is that they still work when covered in mud, dirt and bits of field... you don't need that for riding on the road. You've also got the maintenance cost... disc brakes are fiddly, but more expensive to get serviced than rim brakes. Also commuting does burn through components and you will need to replace pads a few times a year.

Sorry I didn't make it clear I was comparing my 2008 Focus to the 2008 Specialised equivalent. I know all spec's tend to have gone down and prices up due to the recession.

Disc brakes aren't needed on a road or hybrid bike and mechanical disc brakes should be avoided. Decent V or U brakes are as good as entry level discs. They also add more weight! (If you care about that...)

Good point, mechanical discs are not great, and ive only ever had hydraulic discs for trail riding so im not the best judge when it comes to road bikes. I would have thought though that any extra stopping power would be considered a good thing :)

No problem, i just assumed you would only be using it for work. This one then :)

Hardtails (no rear suspension) are what you should be looking at, cheap dual suspension bikes are generally rather rubbish. Plus they are awful for road use.

thanks for all the replys, this looks like just the sort of thing i was hoping for. reading the reviews someone said about the Sport model being only £50 more but a much better model, any ideas about this one?

Have we established if you're riding on road or off road?

Sorry I didn't make it clear I was comparing my 2008 Focus to the 2008 Specialised equivalent.
Focus are a budget brand only available from an online store so will be cheaper like for like.
Just the same as Boardman bikes are cheaper than Specialized / Giant / Trek etc.

thanks for the replys guy, think im going to get the Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc 2010 for £400 if you guys think that is a good bike for the price?

If I had £550 to spend on a MTB this is what i would buy

Most Cycle forums i've visited always recomend Specialized bikes. I bought one myself (same bike 2004 model) and love it, still going strong after 6 years :)

That's what I have ordered through C2W, shoul dget it this week or next, woo hoo! Will have to say I will miss riding my 1995 Kona every day, but not some of the noises it makes!!
