GTX 470 or HD 5850/5870

Thanks everyone for the good advice :)

I am now leaning 51/49 towards the 470. Hardware wise the Ati may be the better card regarding power and temps, but due to past hassles with Ati drivers (here's looking at you HD 4870) I am probably going to stick with the green team.

Think all the Asus 5850s they will let you overclock by increasing the voltage. The bang for buck choice is the 5850 atm. Its up to you to decide whether you want to fork out more for the slightly extra performance of a 5870 or a gtx 470.

If you're happy with Nvidia, odd are you'll end up frustrated with ATI. I've upgraded from a 4870 (replaced a dead 8800GTX) and I can honestly I'm not regretting it. AA is definitely nicer on Nvidia (epsecially their new TRAA modes), and SD video looks amazing with their driver enhancements.

I'm also noticing better driver support in none-mainstream games with Nvidia (Drakensang and Void in particular, both of which verged on unplayable with ATI).

The 470 isn't going to win any awards for value for money, but it's still a good proposition

I've always considered nVidia's AA to be better in motion - static screenshot comparisons don't really seem to tell the true story.

Can't see any difference with AA in motion with ATI or Nvidia and I have had 8800GT, GTX260. If there was any difference I am sure the hundreds of reviews on the web of ATI and Nvidia cards would have made a point of mentioning it.

Even though I will be receiving my 470 tomorrow I still maintain that Ati's have the better cards right now. That said I have made a desicion based upon the driver support for the games I am currently playing, some of which are older.

I would rather have 10fps less, pay 20% more, the power consumption of a space heater than loose AA (not entirely true but just making a point). I cannot imagine not using nHancer. Unfortunately this has been the wrong time to buy as card prices are currently on the high side. Look at Ati whom have raised prices considerably over the past six months - it's usually the other way round.

Please make sure you all familiarise yourself with the rules of the forums. The mentioning of competitors and their pricing is against them.

FAQ - No promotion of OcUK's competitors

Thank you. :)

Can i just ask, what exactly counts as a competetior, and what doesn't ?

im having a hard time trying to figure this out, some sites that have computer componants seem to be ok, but other sites that dont sell computer hardware at all earn you an instant ban.

i really dont know what is and what isn't acceptable
and the rules dont make it any clearer

I have never noticed a difference myself (assuming the same level of AA is applied) but looks are a very subjective thing.

TBH if you got a GTX470 card for a good price then its a pretty good deal. Not quite as good as a HD5850 at the current prices but 'more' performance out of the box will at least be a benefit if you don't wish to overclock.

Despite my reservations against the current Fermi cards I say enjoy it and have fun gaming :)

I did notice a difference in aa quality when i switch from a gtx 295 to a hd5870, the 295 had better aa, but the 5870 looked a lot clearer and detailed!

All the Ati guys are going to love this, so here goes.

I received my 470 this morning and I ran Furmark to check temps in GPU-Z and am rather disturbed by what I have found. Before stress testing the GPU idle temp was 45 and during the stress test (short run) it went up to 85. With all other cards I have owned the temps drop immediately back down once the stress test is complete. Since testing the GPU idle temp does not drop below 71 which worries me. I know these cards run hot but an idle temp of 71 can't be right.

This is not first time that i have come across this.
The way the bios has been set is to slow down the fan as soon as the stress is gone thus the heat dissipates much more slowly than normal.

I have uninstalled the beta drivers and am now using the latest WHQL drivers and the temps are now behaving normally :)

The only issue I have is that MSI Afterburner is not reporting the GPU clock. I will need to find another overclocking fan utility.

Im confused myself mate, in this thread all I did was advise someone that a card he was looking at is actually a huge amount cheaper elsewhere (and mentioned the price he could get it for) and that got blocked out. Didnt mention any competitior or hints etc, yet Ive noticed on other threads this seems acceptable

At the end of the day Im trying to save a guy some money is that so wrong?
I mean a saving of over £50 is noting to be sniffed out.

I even emailed a mod on this, no response.

Bottom line is some consistency is needed.
