Hi everyone.

Just need some advise really... just passed my test, I'm 24 and wondering what cars I should realistically be looking at.

I've done a lot of research on the insurance and with any car I'm going to get it's going to be pricey.. so I was just wondering for under £2000 what models I should be looking at?

Thanks

Fiesta 1.25 zetech is rather pokey engine, nice cars. Was my first :)

My 2ltr focus is only like a 9E or something, so something like a 1.6 may suit you well.

Either that, or the horror that is the corsa 1.2. Not the best car in the world but you see lots of young lads drive them, why? 'Cos they're cheap :p

What's your budget for insurance?

Ant

Hello, I'm 22 & I bought my first car about 2 weeks ago, its a 1.8 ford focus and managed to insure it for just under £1000 - quidco cashback of £70 too. Finding a named driver brings it down too. Did quite a lot of shopping around, mostly over £1600.

Due to your age insurance should not be too much of an issue on anything.

Got myself an MX5 @ 21 after just passing for £1000.

The problem is the insurance quotes I've had say £1000+ and that's for annual payments. As I'm going to be paying monthly, with the stupid interest rate it takes it up about £400 it's insane!

I've been looking at the Ford Focus as I've had quite a few people recommending that.

Also when you go onto these comparison websites it's the date when the car was purchased that really bumps it up.. I don't understand why that changes anything?

Does anyone recommend any particular insurance company for 1st time drivers?

Where have you been getting your quotes from?

Everywhere really mate. Have used the comparison websites as well..

Comparing it to AJRimmer.. whos 22 and got insurance for around £1000 for a 1.8 focus.

I'm 24 and get insurance for around £1300-£1400 for a 1.6 focus.

I even checked to go on my sisters car as a named driver... £1700.

Any ideas why it's so expensive?

That sounds very wrong. Last year I was 22 and managed to insure my first car for £750, and I was living in a part of Bristol that's usually on fire.

Your insurance will drop significantly over the next 5 years. So I suggest for your first car you buy the cheapest low-powered crap you can.

I'm thinking old 1.2 clio/fiesta sort of thing.

Get a personal loan and pay off the insurance that way if you can't afford the whole amount. Works out much cheaper than the insurance company's lolinterest rate.

That or a credit card with a long interest free period...

check out 'More Th>n' for insurance if you are yet to have any NCB's. that or tescos will most likely be your best bet.

I wish people would stop doing this - why dont people realise that an because an insurance company is cheap for one person, it wont be cheap for another?

Everyone I knew when i was young was with Direct Line, but they were (and still are!) very expensive.

Unless it's a specialist insurance company for a specialist purpose (for young drivers, modified cars etc) then there really is no point in reccomending mainstream insurers. They'll all come up on comparison sites anyway.

Actually, the Admiral group seem to consistently be the cheapest amoung new/younger drivers, so I'll recommend then.

Bell, Admiral, Elephant. Try them all as sometimes their prices vary.

If there's a reason to reccomend them other than one person getting a good quote, it's fine - it's just the assumption of "they're cheap for me so they'll be cheap for you" that bothers me, because it's just not that simple
