The bloke on VF forums said they would inform people of these changes by SMS message.

14 days before the 1st is the 18th, so we all should get a text message before the 18th about these changes.

If not then you can probably cancel that way as well.

Idea to quickly rack up usage. Start uploading some hefty files. :)

Have only used 7mb so far in 2 days as I use WiFi at home. 6mb of that is uploading big images.

Download 'Listen' from the Market, and just play some pod casts. Turn down the volume and you don't even have to listen to them.

Radio on Beebplayer? Again just turn down the volume.

Or tether the phone to your PC / laptop...? And stream some iPlayer. :D

Shame I've got an awful signal at home so streaming is a pain, but I'll try and tether it up for some iPlayer HD goodtimes :p

Ill just tether it up to my PC and download a file of my FTP Site, that should take me well over 500MB.

Should have asked him if it was an FUP or a hard cap, never mind.

Just laughed at this on Twitter...

That was me :D , I decided not to bother responding to such a ridiculous statement :p I used 900MB of data on my Nexus last month and was looking at getting a Desire from the twitter guys, selling that phone and using the sim in my Nexus....

Not any more :p

Now I'm looking at T-mob I think - 3GB data, that's more like it :D

I've already posted all that info about what is happening and what clauses you can cancel under Andy. :D

Oh and for those who have just started a Desire contract and wonder about if you get to keep the phone....

clicky

I've just taken out a contract with DAP (300min 3000txts 500mb internet). As I'm no where near the 500mb limit will I still be able to cancel my contract and keep the phone?

Sounds too good tbh but I guess I can live with the 500mb.

No you probably won't be able to cancel if you don't get over the 500mb FUP as it stands now. But if you manage too it does seem that you will be able to keep the phone.

And you won't live with 500mb once you sort out lots of nice apps. :)

Though I guess you could have a case there with only having the phone a few days / a week. Here is the scenario...

So you have just bought a Desire on Vodafone....only a few days into the contract with the 500mb FUP, this change is coming into affect.

Given that you probably won't have lots of apps installed getting to know the phone etc, you won't rack up a large amount of data usage in a month. Your mate has a Magic that he has had for a while, getting well above 500mb nearly every month now he has lots of apps and functions he has found the phone can do.

You could then claim under T&C clause 11b4

we change this agreement to your significant disadvantage including changing or withdrawing services (we will tell you if this is the case) and you write to us within one month of us telling you about the change. This does not apply if the change relates to services which you can cancel without us ending this agreement.

Although you are not initially because you have only had the phone a few days, you could say to them that you are going to be put at a disadvantage. I know the clause states that they will tell you if that's the case, but putting evidence forward of 'x' amount of people cancelling their contracts, because they have this app and that app installed, use this feature etc that pushes their data usage above the new 500mb limit increasing their overall data and call cost by 10% should be good enough for you to be able to cancel yours.

Anyone see where I'm coming from? Or does that sound like complete tripe. :D

It seems that if you are cancelling the contract under the 7 day DSR then you would be required to return the phone.

I do.

I think given the two clauses we can use at our disposal to try and cancel with, if you stand your ground (even if they try and get out of it) you will almost certainly be able to cancel it, regardless of your situation.

This is, of course, provided they decide to put it through and the information we have been given is correct. :p

Edit- Another thing that bugs me is the customer service reps lying to people - "It's a shame you feel this way, especially as only a handful of individuals ever go above 500 megs of mobile usage a month." That soon gets eaten up if you stream some radio, watch a few videos and so forth, coupled with loading images on websites etc.

Add that to the fact Apps update regularly and so on, it's just total rubbish. They should be able to provide completely free mobile internet in this day and age, I understand if they blocked Tethering though.
