RC Airplane people - Question about what I will need

lol, iv never been to a RC club myself but I could imagine what it would be like. Not my kinda thing really, sure i wouldnt have the buddy system but I can learn ok on my own, if I crash it, I crash it. Ill be defenaltly putting the hours in on the sim and taking extreme caution when starting out.

Im still going to go nitro as I have had a go of foamy's before and they are just too light they dont fly and feel like flying a proper model. Saying that I think I might invest in one aswel as the nitro to get me going, as the nitro ill be building the kit up not buying it in one go.

Does anyone know if I can get a cheap foamy that I can fly ready right now that will work with my DX6i radio?

If you are in East Sussex, I know a guy selling his lot of nitro rc planes. Some are really big and all really well put together.

Im in South Wales, for the nitro I would like to build from scratch as it will be a better learning curve for me, however if i did get a cheap leccy as a mess about I would probably just buy one ready to fly.

Don't believe a foamy is only there for beginners. There are different foams and densities, even some of the very expensive models being foam just with a very thin laminate of some sort covering it. Performance and flying style is due more to the wing shape and cord length.

Some decent foams are made by multiplex = http://www.t9hobbysport.com/default.asp?CatID=93

The flight sim is they way to go but the first time you're in the air or landing will be very much different from the sim. The biggest problem you will have will be the controls reversing when flying towards you and the other much bigger problem that the sim will not be able to teach is the way the plane causes the optical illusion that it has change direction when it hasn't. Hard to explaine but its probably the biggest cause of crashes and its basical because the plane turns into a black silhouette and your brain cant tell which way it's going or you believe its going the other way.

Where in South Wales are you my friend?

If you're interested in Slope Soaring then I can point you in the direction of some of the finest slopes in Europe ;)

If you're up the top end of the Valleys any time i'd be happy to show you a thing or two with Slope Soaring - Have flown IC too.
(Have a Trainer lead so no worries about crashing!)

I use Phoenix for Helicopters mainly - and a bit of Planes.
I found they're pretty close to the real thing, but Slope Soaring / Gliding on Phoenix is a bit of a no no :(

RC sims do this. There's two modes: in-cockpit, and stood on ground.

u do know that that plane require abit of modifacation for it to fit togeather right and the fly right. ? ie: the fuel tank wont fit untill so shape the bonnet and the push rods are really still and on the older batch there were crossed over the wrong way in the fuss.

i would stick a irvine 53 in it tbh with a master airscrew prop :D

if u are running a spectrum dx6i u need a good charger where the center pole is negative.

servos i would get JR saves cutting the little tabs off and are very good.

its best not to run with a fuel filter on the plane but put 2 filters on your fuel pump line to stop sucking the crap out of the bottom of your fuel container.

Don't think electric = foamie - you can set any plane, even huge wingspans and balsa up as electric these days. One area that wouldn't exist without electric power systems is foamies but any plane can be run as electric - without the break in, with reduced muck, without the noise (although that is what some people like), with less kit to carry around too.

In answer to your question about a plane you can easily setup with the DX6i, there are some bind and fly planes from E-flight and loads of good almost ready to flys. have a look around and check out rcgroups. (great radio for the price by the way - i fly with a DX7 but had it been out when I bought my radio the DX6i would have been on my shopping list - good enough for helis too.)

Thanks for the info guys :)

Yeah the DX6i is a great radio from what iv used it so far, im sure it will work just as good in full mode rather than just attached to the SIM, the reviews are good tho.

It was reccomended by a friend in work who uses the newer DX7 model for heli's. I payed £163.00 for both the radio and the SIM, which is a good price really concidering the radio is around £80-£90 and the sim is around £60-£70 each.

I will have a look around for bind and fly planes, do these come recievers build in or would I have to use the seperate reciever (IE the one im going to be buying for my nitro?) I dont want to spend £80 on something like this, as the bulk of my money is going on the nitro, but if I can pick up a cheapo electric one to learn with for £30 or so then ill be happy to get one.

Rhys thanks for the offer :) that would be quite insightful :) If you are up for it let me know and ill be happy enough to pop along and have a ganders.

I think its just a case of finding the best bits to use with the WOT4. Engine wise and servo's Iv had some reccomendations. Iv joined rcgroup.com so am asking about on there, I might also phone round a few model shops and find out what they reccomend is the most suitable bits to use inside the model aircraft.

Unless you can fly the sim at 800 foot away then no they can't. Its not the fact of flying from point of view or cockpit view its the optical illusion the plane can play on your eye when it silhouettes. Only way you can get use to this and ignore it is with flying hours.

Having first hand experience with the sim it does offer those, as the plane goes off in to the distance, I have crashed many a times because visually iv been disorientated, thinking the plane is flying one way rather than the other and it does turn into a silhouette.

bind n fly include a receiver, almost ready to fly do not (and are often nowhere near ready to fly!)

Cool thanks :) Might have a look in to this as a cheaper option, and keep my main one for the special days (when im having a confident day :)

Also cleared up what ARTF stands for :)

No problem :) I'll let you know. Would you be able to make it a week evening or just weekends?

Have flown the Wot 4 myself plenty of times. Excellent wings for beginners and all flyers.
Very stable at low speed and high speed alike.
Lovely inverted flight and goes like **** with 18% nitro in :D.
