SETI@home News Vol. 103

Thanks for the input Reaver, its just irritating to say the least been sat here since 9am trying to update etc, i wont be catching you up today ;)

you might if i insist on playing with overclocks again just before i go to bed then wake up to a frozen desktop like Wednesday night with nearly 12hrs of lost crunching

You could try backing up you folders uninstall Boinc then re install Boinc and replace the folders with the backups. That way you'll find out if it's boinc causing the problem.

Touch wood, did just that uninstalled and re in stalled and seems to be running ok....
Now i wanted to play with the overclocks but even i thought no, coming into summer, and given my track record with tinkering.....oc's are off till september lol :)

Toxic (or anyone else running XP64) can you check something for me...

looks like I was too clever with my crunching rig- I set up the machine and set up remote access, then stuffed the machine under a bench at work. I disconnected the monitor, which seems to have disabled the GPU?? I thought this only applied to Win7, which is one reason I went for XP64 - Do I need to use dummy vga adapters?

I can see in the boinc messages
No usable GPU's
GPU's have become unusable, disabling GPU tasks

This is after I stopped and started the boinc client via remote access..
If I cant get it running again, it will have to stay that way for 2 weeks as Im not going back to work again. Thats a lot of credit lost

You gone soft , buy an air conditioner already :p

Ok Mr Super siggy give us your thoughts on cooling, seriously i dont mind spending a bit but as you might ask "what gives best bang for buck" i.e. what will cool best while being not super expensive or would i be looking at a wc setup ...crumbs :eek:

Evening Edgedemon i just tried removing monitor, took it out three times left it for 1 min, each time i reconnected there was only 1 active gpu but the other 2 resumed pretty quickly :confused:

Cheers for trying mate
I found out that RDP disables the gfx driver and uses a microsoft driver instead, thats why boinc was reporting no gpu's
At least Im back to crunching on 1 gpu core again :p
Still having trouble with the other core though, tried dropping the memory down to 750Mhz, but it made no difference

Still 1 core while your away is better than none, shame you were not around the corner i'm pretty good at babysitting pc's of late. :)

Yeah, it all helps, but then I have the hassle of a trying to get a refund out of ebay when I get back.
Looks like my plan of world domination with 295's has come to an end :(

Must admit i am finding it hard to get hold of them at sensible prices, if you were going for a full load of 295's maybe worth considering the 470's or 480's instead, hopefully they will be compatable in the near future :), or theres still a lot of 285's to be had , although even they seem to have risen in price. :)

I really hope you paid with paypal cos if you did there is a chance of getting your money back even if you meet resistance from the seller.

Fit for the purpose ?

Was thinking about buying 295's, this has made me think about that some more.

Snap....think i will stick to the hope of 470 and 480 becoming useable in next few weeks fingers crossed. Brand new 295's are way off the chart

This is a good time for an update from loudbob on those hybrids - need to know what they are comparable with.

That new sig seems to have done wonders for k3v, his output shot up last night, excellent mate :)

Whats happened to Meridian ?

Dont forget peeps, Stephen Hawking's Universe begins on the Discovery Channel on Sunday at 9pm, should be interesting.

Oh yes, who's a Millionaire then ;), congratulations T

I did, and have contacted the seller

Reading around, it would seem that it is pot luck as to whether these will work on both cores. But it would seem that the problem is more likely on the older 2 PCB versions rather than the newer single pcb versions, so 295's might be ok if you are careful what version you get..
If I can get a refund, I might try and get a single pcb version, or I might save a bit more and get a 480, though they are so expensive :(
One thing I know is that 470's are out atm because according to the comparison charts, they are behind the 295 in performance and I cant see the point buying new tech that performs worse than the old tech
Maybe with the new boinc client app and cuda 3, these cards might come into their own, it is wait and see time...

This is a problem as I am on the verge of paying for a PNY XLR8 GTX 295 (single pcb), a voice in my head says buy buy but my hearts saying ........
Reaver, need some advice on this.

who needs a new gpu when you can have a new signature

If only that were true, I'd save a bleeding fortune - still, having both is good also :D
