duplicate the moves into a chess engine, then use its suggestions as their moves.

Yeah I know some people (two german guys) that used to cheat on WCN, downloaded huge databases (i.e. dozens of GB) of moves to support Fritz and used to play against some very good players. Got banned a couple of times but were able to come back.

As for why they do it, I'm not sure, I think they just get a sense of achievement out of it. One of them is a bit of an idiot but the other guy is actually very bright and articulate, so it's not just 'retards' who cheat.
