Basically managed to get a virus and got rid of everything except this but I am just going to reinstall anyway. The threat name is Win32/Mebroot.mbr trojan. I know data goes on sectors but is this actually something that could threaten a reinstall after a full format or should I run some software to ultimatly clean the disk?

The MBR is at the very start of the disk, so I would definitely nuke the entire drive before installing Windows again. A full format [not quick] should overwrite everything.

Are you sure a full format would do it can't data still be recovered?

EDIT: But then other software would be needed? So could this happen?

You are worried another virus at some point in the future is going to get onto your system and recover the virus from the formatted hard drive?

A file is only recoverable if it hasn't been overwritten. The MBR will most certainly be rewritten as it is a vital part of making your OS boot.

Unless you use GPT ;)
