...you create an account on line with just your first name and you don't have to add any numbers or anything to it. I just registered for one and I was able to use Dave as my user name.

Pointless thread but I wanted to share my joy :p

It annoys me when people take a username I want.

eBay is the worst example. I want a username that's taken by a user in the US. She hasn't used it since 2002 but they won't delete the account :(

I always find if I can get my name either Fox or Sam, then the forum is preety much dead anyway lol

Yes, I do quite like the feeling :p

I wanted the BC2 soldier name "Khan" but someone had it.....and Khaan and Khaaan so I had to have Khaaaan.

Bah.

You won't be happy when your account is brute forced by some enterprising Russian fella.

I was chuffed when i got tefal in bc2 for years in every game some ******* has gotten it first :p

muhahahaha

Freshage is my normal, never had a issue with getting it as a user name, and when I do get a issue, it's normally from when I signed up yonks ago and forgotten, so always request a password rest email and works 9 times out of 10 lol.

This forum was the only problem due to having swear filter in the user names, freshage has fre(shag)e in it :(

User names are largely redundant in my opinion. An email address is required for 95% of online registrations and acts perfectly well as a unique identifier, so why require a unique, immutable user name as well?

An email address for account identification/logging in and a separate non-unique, mutable display name would make much more sense. This way you're guaranteed to have a unique log-in ID and don't have to worry about it being taken already. It's a nightmare having to remember all the alternative user names I've had to think up for sites where my usual one is taken.

Except for web forums, otherwise everyone would be called bob or dave.

You need a program called RoboForm.
