8800GTX fubar, need something new!

Hey guys, I've been running my 8800GTX for about 3 years with no problems, and now it has given up on me and more or less died.. more specifically I'm getting problems with nvlddmkm.sys, during startup I'll BSoD due to the file and the only way to get around it is to start up in safe mode or else to delete/rename the file from the System32/drivers directory. Even then, I get weird graphic errors all over my screen.. even when I'm in my BIOS/safe mode.

After installing latest drivers, reinstalling, rolling back, installing old drivers and reformatting windows I've pretty much decided that the card is fubar, and since it's an OEM from OcUK I can't get an RMA (I don't think I can, anyway).

Unless someone knows of a miracle cure for my old 8800GTX, I'm now looking for something new! I've currently got a IP35-pro mobo, and I'm looking to spend around £200 (though <3 spending anything less than that, £150 would be ideal). I'm not particularly looking to get any more performance than the 8800GTX was giving me, so whatever matches or does better for a nice price works for me. This has caught my eye but I'm not all that great with hardware, ergo why I'm posting here.

Hmm.. that's pretty tempting, they're cheaper too. Never used ATI before, but I'm not opposed to the idea.

I think I'll go with this one, as long as I'm not making some kind of stupid choice?

Done deal then, I've ordered the one I said and I should hopefully be back on EVE with PinkFloyd and co. sometime this week. Cheers for the help! :D

Spooky. I could have written this post!

Exactly the same problems, same card, bit older. I wonder if there has been some driver update from Nvidia that has screwed the card, or we are now in the world of MBF (meantime before failure) for the card.

I've also narrowed it down to a 5770, but want the quietest cooler. Any views, anyone?

Yeah, this nvlddmkm.sys error seems to be all over the bloody place and has been for a few years, but with no actual fix available. I'm pretty sure it's not driver related, since the card kept on doing it even after I'd done a complete reformat and whilst the PC was still in the BIOS so I guess the hardware is just slowly dying all over the place.. maybe they've cut corners somewhere?

Kinda looking forward to my first ATI card, never used one before but I hear the drivers are nicer than NVidia's.

Hmm, I see someone elses 8800 GTX is borked in a thread a few days back. Sounds like the end of the line for 3 year old cards.

This has great reviews and is quiet - but £20 more than the competition. Worth is anyone?

?? Everywhere I look they are about £200 ?? And then probably more if I want a quiet cooler. No thanks. About to hit the buy button...

Have a look around the forum. Quite a lot of people are saying they have picked up 5830's for just a little over £150.

Edit: Just found some. Took me 4 minutes.

Edit: Just found some more. £10 extra gets you a none reference cooler. Took me all of 10 minutes to find them...

Edit: A little more than other places have them at but the warranty is direct with OcUK for two years.

not alone.... mine broke 1 month shy of being 3 years old and i just about managed to get it shipped off and repaired by asus before the warranty ran out.

my mates also broke just shy of 3 years, perhaps two, though he put it in the oven and it worked again! i know many people who have 8800 GTX's dead which worries me as mine did not run hot at all.

i did punish it with 1620MHZ shader clocks though myself but the core was low 621mhz and the memory had to stay at default :P anyways im going to use it now until it dies and sell my 4890 i got as a replacement, anyone want it on the bay? im throwing in dead space!!! :D

hear what you say, jigger. i did eventually find a straight ati version for £157 before delivery, but don't really need the extra horsepower, and being a low noise junkie - this sold me:

It's arriving today.

If your not looking for any extra performance you can get a HD4770 for bout £70 that cards almost exactly equal to a 8800GTX

*EDIT*

Ahh didn't notice you'd bought a new card, nvm
