OK, i have overclocked my cpu to 3.2ghz, running prime95 to test stability. After about 15 minutes, core 4 has failed the test with one error, stating a hardware problem. The other cores are still testing, so whats the problem?

I have a screen shot here showing what I mean.

Should I be worried?

more info needed.

What cooling, what prime test - blend of small FFT, what bios settings...

I see the vid is 1.325 and showing 1.328 in cpu-z. This is fine for stock settings but hit and miss when overclocked. Up the Vcore in the bios to 1.55. Temps will be higher but it wont bomb out when testing. Temps are fine up to mid 80s but ive had mine at 94c before with 1.67volts!

You always get one core that will fail first on an overclock (mine is always the third core). Notch it down or give it more volts(personally I wouldn't go higher than 1.5V).

ok guys, thanks for the heads up.

Info wise:

cooling (don't laugh) I am using the Kandalf LCS case...

It was testing on Blend torture test.

Ill try upping the vcore a notch or two, see what happens.

check your memory first, I had a similar problem 6 months ago and made the mistake of getting a new cpu. I still had the same problem after putting in the new cpu, found out few hours later that one of the memeory stick has given up.

I needed about 1.35v LLC for 3.2 gHz on my old Q6600.

So on a baord with no LLC and vdroop, ur looking at about 1.375v maybe?

On note of memory, also make sure youare dropping the memory divider to compensate for an increased bus speed. You can use cpu-z to check what it running at. (tho rem its DDR, so cpu-z reports true speed, half of what advertised)

Snap, my third core is always first to fail, give it more juice!
Same here. I had this problem when I was running Prime95 yesterday also with 3rd core failed. Ran it again today without changing any setting and it got no problem at all.

I'm on about 1.425V though...probably it needed more juice because of the crap nforce board I got.

Shouldnt need 1.425v for 3.15ghz, unless you have massive vdroop.

My Q6600 could do 3.6 gHz with 1.45v LLC
And that isnt even that great. I know people with much lower volts.

I have my Q6600 at 3.2GHz with 1.450v :( I'm using an ASUS P5K vanilla, which has massive vdroop. I haven't tried the pencil mod though, which supposedly reduces vdroop.

My Q6600's core 4 is the first to fail when the vcore isn't high enough.

That's really strange as i can run mine @ 3.3Ghz will less than stock volts (1.208v) but if i push any higher i need to up the volts

Does the extra 300Mhz really make any difference?. Just curious.

Yes, I remember benching at 3ghz and then at 3.6 and fps gained quite a bit. I mainly play Starcraft 2 at the moment and that requires a fair amount of CPU mhz when a lot is going on. So does GTA4. Someone posted Crysis running at different clock speeds with the same hardware and there were big gains to be had from increased cpu clocks when using a half decent graphics card

Also DOSbox games like Blood require a beefy CPU clock when running in 800 x 600.

Anyway, knowing that I can run at a higher speed is enough to make a difference

Cool, wouldn't have thought you would have noticed much difference!. I'm happy with mine at 3.2Ghz at 1.352v 400x8. Getting lots of vdroop on my vanilla P5K but temps are very low indeed so I reckon I could push it up a wee bit to 3.6Ghz easily if required. :)

The higher clock speed does make a lot of difference. All i was highlighting is the fact that even a small increasing in mhz can need a lot more voltage.

What revision and year Q6600s are some of you guys running?

Heard that some of the later G0s werent so good. One I had was a 2007 G0, got it when the G0 (SLACR) first game out.
