As mentioned all I need is a cpu, motherboard and ram. My budget is tight and I cant go over £350, any help would be great as I cant decide what to buy.

Do you already have a graphics card? If you are looking for budget gaming performance you will be best to go for a cheaper cpu and a more expensive graphics card (since that is where you will see the major performance increases).

I would go for a triple or dual core AMD athlon II cpu with a budget (but not rubbish) mobo and ram. Then you can spend all the money you save on better graphics. If you want to upgrade later you can go all the way up to phenom x6 without changing the motherboard or RAM.

How about something like this:

That way you already have an extra £126 to spend on better graphics.

I have no direct experience of the motherboard. Others may have a better idea of it. You may want to choose a different one in the same (ish) price range if you are wanting to do xfire etc. But that one should allow you to overclock the 245 if you wish.

Will be similar in performance to the i5 spec that Cycrow suggested, however the AM3 socket will be supported for longer than 1156.

Also that motherboard does symmetric crossfire, so you could buy 1 HD 5770 now (good choice for a budget gaming machine) and add another one later.

I already have a 5850 I just want to know the best I can get for my money, can anyone beat these setups so far? I have all other things for build including windows 7 64 ultimate, I will be useing my 42" hdtv @ 1080p via hdmi from 5850. Thanks for feedback so far.

Id go with this setup and spend the leftover on an H50 cooler and get the i5 overclocked

i3 will be slower than i5 or the Phenom X4 in most games, if you've got £350 to spend you might as well spend it and get the most out of your 5850.

If you want to have the option of a Crossfire, USB 3.0,SATA 3.0 and a longer supported socket then I would look at AM3 build. OTH,if this is not important then consider a socket 1156 based build build with a Core i5 750.

Heres my go at it, only £1 over XD.

If you want a decent motherboard with crossfire, newer chipset, USB3.0, 6Gb/s SATA, then you could have a look at this:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-393-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782

It does however cost extra £30.

A Phenom II X4 955BE overclocked to 4.0GHz should be just fast enough to crossfire a pair of 5850 with little to none CPU bottleneck. But with graphic card(s) any faster than that, you would need a better/faster CPU.

I too have been looking at budget builds to play around with. These are biased to going for large overclocks (4Ghz target) on the cheap. Of course mileage may vary!

ASRock 890GX Extreme3 £99
AMD Athlon II X4 630 2.8Ghz £78
G.Skill F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO £105

Total £282

Gigabyte GA-H55-UD3H £95
Intel I3 530 £91
G.Skill F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO £105

Total £291

All prices inc VAT & delivery etc. Thoughts?
