Right, as the movie industry is churning out remakes by the dozen I wondered what everyone thought about the originals of these 'pointless' remakes.

Now I love movies, old and new, however of all of the horror remakes only the original Halloween really stands out to be as being a great film by todays standards. The cinematography still pees on most modern films and whilst I didn't hate the Rob Zombie remake the sequel is one of the worst films i've ever seen.

Off the top of my head I have seen the Friday the 13th, TCM, Hills Have Eyes remakes and originals and although i'm sure back in the day they were impactful, nowadays they just look dated and to me the remakes are just better. Whether they are 'good' films by general standards isn't the question but I would say they are much easier to watch now and for me don't ever detract from the originals.

I am seeing the new Nightmare on Elm Street at some point and after rewatching the original the other day, I think it would be hard for me to think it was worse considering the original is so campy and cheesy now.

So, opinions?

boundaries were pushed forwards in horor massively since the 80's dont think you can really watch any and think they are that good anymore because everyones senses are numb compared to what people would see in every day life/films back then

even films like scum and that skinhead one with Russell crow dont seem all that bad anymore but at the time they were considered to brutal

There are certain films that stand the test of time and most end up just looking outdated and down the line just won't provide the same enjoyment. Films that rely on cutting edge technology or breaking social boundaries are particularly vulnerable, I mean how well do you think Avatar will stand up to films in 10 years time?

Not necessarily. Toy Story was the first feature length movie made entirely using cgi and it's aged quite well I think.

That's probably not the best example as while it was a technological breakthrough, it wasn't completely reliant on that and was supplemented by a good story and good characters.

I've not seen Avatar so I can't really comment on the storyline and characters but I got the impression that it was definitely style over substance. I don't think you can say the same for this recent batch of horror remakes. They might not be as scary or shocking as they once were but many of them are classics.

Recent batch of horror remakes are nothing short of money and modern film making exercises, which result in rather uninspiring films. As for films some of them are "classics" (of course depending on your definition) but many simply haven't stood the test of time. I have seen a few of then and found them to be average in today's cinema, it's all a matter of perspective really as films I grew up on won't have the same impact they had on younger generation. Suppose there is a degree of rose tinted glasses phenomenon involved with this too.

this

they might have the better effect and better quality sound/imaging but theyre just boring rip offs at the end of the day

what did you hate about the original halloween ? it was a fresh film with a good story and decent feeling of suspense throughout with help from the awesome soundtrack

the remake looked damn great but essentialy it was just lazy/boring. you knew everything that was going to happen , you knew the story , you knew the characters. same with most other remakes that copy the original

maybe its just me but a film isnt just about looking great. i dont care one bit when a film starts looking outdated. take metropolis as an extreme example

I said I thought the original Halloween was the only one that stood up today :p

Its mainly my whole point though, people saying why are they remaking this film etc the original was a classic. Yet, 90% of those people won't then watch an original and say 'yea that was brilliant' more like 'that was a bit cheesy...'. If I had the choice of the original and the remake unless I haven't seen the original I would watch the remake, not as much cheese is almost guranteed but yea they are also just easier to watch thanks to the higher production values. Acting doesn't really come into it as acting on horrors has never really been great, new or old :D
