Just bottled my 1st ever batch of homebrew! Very cloudy at the mo but it's going to be bottle conditioned.

added some sugar to give it some fizz.

Initial tests/over enthusiastic starting of the siphon is very tasty.

Only worked it out at 4% though, pack said 4.5%.

Maybe the extra .5 comes in the bottle fermentation/conditioning.

Probably increase in the bottle slightly, now what you need to do is change the yeast for strong yeast and add double sugar from the start :D

Yeah, it will go up a touch in the bottle - but a hydrometer reading is hardly accurate, can only give a rough guide.
Make sure that you keep those bottles very tight, and out of any sunlight and in a room with a constant temperature.

I have 42 litres waiting to be bottled, got all the bottles - just need the time.

Did you use simple syrup, or just sugar? If sugar, make sure you dissolve it. In future, use simple syrup.

The kit contained 2 cans of brown sticky stuff and didn't need sugar adding.

It's all sat in 2 litre bottles in the dining room. They are starting to get some gas already!

I've ALWAYS wanted to brew my own lager with those all in one kits that you can buy, but I've heard it can make the room smell a lot? (I live in what is bascially the same as Uni accomodation)

I've just started brewing my own beer this year, since a new homebrew shop opened at the end of our road!! I can't believe how good the kits are now. You certainly can't go wrong at 50p a pint, it's saved me loads of money already this year.

Bottles are far to fiddly for me. Mine just goes into a pressure barrel to settle.

I'm debating doing some all grain homebrew to compliment my wine making. And I would probably go out and buy the kit had I not just bought a load more winemaking stuff last week.

Got a 10 gallons of apfelwein on the go, 5 gallons of merlot, a gallon of coffee wine, 2 gallons of blackberry wine, 1 gallon of parsnip wine and and a gallon of ribena wine (yes I know, ribena!). Some great recipes in this book I bought. Only thing being made a from kit is the merlot.

I'm bottling 21 litres of American pale ale today, that's going to be a fun job. Will have to get the other half to help out I think.

On another note, when you added sugar to the bottles, how much did you add? Too much and you could end up with bottle bombs.

My dad used to do this and several times either the bottles exploded or the tops blew holes in the ceiling.

Just make sure they are safely away from kids or pets who could knock them over.

LOL. I cant stop laughing thinking about my mate that made beer he put it in old wine bottles. He bought the corks and press and the shrink caps. Sitting one night all he heard was popping. Opened the door and was battered in the face with corks He put way to much sugar in them when bottling LOL.

The worst i had was when making "Turbo Cider" I used pears and put them in PET bottles. as soon as you pinged the bottle side it went really funny and angry looking. I had to throw them into the wheely bin and slam the lid shut so they burst. If you undid the lid you got soaked and the bottle went off like a missile

Pictures?

I'll be taking a few pictures during the bottling process just as a record, will probably whack a few up in this thread now. Going out for lunch and the bottles are in the dishwasher just now. So can't be bothered bottling 40plus bottles.

I could see you being very popular in the block doing that! :p

little tip to save bit of cash ,i go to the local hotel and ask them for there empty bottles, they are more than willing as most have to pay to recycle them:) also parsnip wine is the strongest if done right ,for me never again:)

:p

Thats why i'm trying to find out if it smells or not! :D

From what I mind there's not an over powering smell only thing I know that stinks is if you boil your own hops and all that kind of stuff.

These kits tend not to smell much.

The beer kit was no where near as strong as the wine. had to realy sniff at it to smell the yeast.

Sugar is 1/2 teaspoon to 1 pint.

Looked at it this morning and it's clearing nicely, about 5mm sludge and yeast in each bottle.

Going to be fun to pour!
