Firstly apologies for breaking the two cardinal rules of motors: 1. Don't buy new and 2. don't get finance.
My reason for breaking these are 4 fold: I am in a country where new cars are quite cheap, I have never owned a new car before so place a value on doing so, I have money in the UK but the current exchange rate is not good enough to warrant moving it over. Also interest rates are low.

bearing this in mind which of these would you go for.

1) Mitsubishi Pajero (Shogun in the UK I think)
early 2009, top model, 3.8l with most options, 10k miles - £15000
+ insurance (quoted £1000 due to me being under 25)
+ hire car for 2 months (£800) (I can't get finance on a used car for 2 more months)
+ servicing
+ have to pay 1% more interest on finance
+ have to find a decent car then faf around getting the car inspected and valued by finance company

2) Same car as above but brand new - £21000
free years insurance
free servicing to 50000km
don't have to drive a crappy hire car 200km a day for 2 more months
but have to take the hit of the first years depreciation

Which would you go for? (and please don't say "car xyz")

Put it this way, get your new car now, or get the exact same car in 2 months time and have an extra £4k (cost + insurance + hire costs).

IMO you would be silly to lose out on £4k just so you don't have to drive a hire car for 2 months.

It depends if the extra cost is worth it to you. However I'd not want to drive a Shogun for 200km a day so would be looking for some sort of saloon and a cheap 4wd to play in the sand with.

If you are going to keep it for a long time, I would treat myself and buy new. This buy a used one under 12 months old is defiantely cheaper. But I am always suspicious as to why somebody has decided to take such a hit on it so soon. Obviously thre are exceptions and bargains.

What's wrong with buying new? As long as you understand you are paying a premium for not buying second-hand goods, I don't see the problem.

Do you think that owning it from new is worth the difference in price?

Is it me or does everyone on here live in the UAE at the moment?

I've no idea what advice to offer you as like everyone else here I dont know the financial setup in the UAE so I dont know whether youve grasped how it works correctly or not and therefore cannot tailor an opinion either way.

So with that, buy a Ford Mondeo.

£21000 is 52 months of car hire which is free servicing, inclusive insurance, and no panic to get rid of a nearly new car when Dubai gets fed up of immigrants taking all their jobs :)

... or I could just buy a brand new car the same model as the hire car, service and insure it for 52 months then scrap it when I leave for <21k :p

Scrap it? Just take it to the dunes and trash the hell out of it.

Or head to the airport and leave it at the door like most of the expats were doing 18 months ago never to come back.

Yeah tried that, Nissan Sunnys aren't the best offroad...
