I need some advise reagrding a paypal claim against me. AGAIN!

I sold a catalytic converter on ebay. I did exactly what the buyer asked of me including posting it out right away and knocking £5 off the price because 'that's all he had in his paypal account' :rolleyes:

He received the catalyst within 2 days and he left positive feedback
'Great item and very good communication. Many thanks a++++++++

9 days later, he saying the pipe is bent at the flange and it wont fit his car. He's put in a dispute with ebay.

I got this email yesterday
Details the buyer provided:
Problem: The item is not as described
The buyer has tried contacting you
The buyer paid on 26 Apr, 2010
The buyer contacted you through email.
You have refused to refund / deliver (again) / repair because "the item was sent in good condition".
More comments: "the item was sent in good condition the seller is refusing for refund"
The item is damaged

Firstly, the item WAS as described. All it said on the listing was 'mazda 323f cat converter removed from a 1995 1.8 GLX' and that is what he got. I didn't say it was in excellent condition and i never said it was in bad condition either

Secondly, i HAVE NOT refused a refund. I simply said 'send it back and upon inspection, if the item is in the same condition as i sent it, i shall sign the delivery note'

I don't mind refunding the buyer as long as i get it back in the condition i sent it in. I want to inspect the returned item BEFORE i sign any delivery notes. If the delivery driver refuses to let me open and inspect it, where do i stand in all of this? Will paypal still refund his money??
 
It wasn't bent. It was in good condition. I removed it myself and it came off the car easily. This guy is a chancer. I should have realised that when he wanted to knock a fiver off the £20 asking price. Tight ****

Surely if someone leaves feedback, this should limit their chance of making a claim. I mean, why leave feedback before testing/fitting the damn thing?

I think once you buy second hand goods off ebay, you should have a time limit of 2 weeks to leave feedback, if you don't, then it will automatically leave positive feedback for you, and once you have left that feedback, you cannot put a claim in for faulty goods unless it is still under warranty. 2 weeks is more than enough to make sure something works IMO.

I told him i marked it with invisible ink (i didn't really) just to try and make him think twice about pulling a fast one. The main thing i want to know is, will i be able to open and inspect the goods BEFORE signing any paperwork?

I don't want to sign for a rusty old thing and he gets all his money back.
 
This is the reason I dont use paypal, even after a year or two I've heard horror stories of paypal issue'ing a refund.

Usually not, most delivery companies wont like it but you may be able to make an exception.

Shame, yet another con-artist on ebay. It ceased being news a long time ago.

I would find it more rewarding to actually set fire to my money than use Ebay.
 
What's his feedback like?

And there's nothing to suggest that Paypal will side with him, the "they always side with buyers" is rubbish.

No offence mate but it wouldn't have done you any favours telling him this as he'd just use a UV light and scrub it off!

if they left feedback saying great item, surely they didnt leave that before looking at the item. Ok it might not have fitted (not you problem) but the general condition should be obvious.
 
I think i might give them a call tbh. They might do what they did last time and give me a voucher and refund the buyer at the same time.

After this, i can say that i'm done with paypal. I've got a few other bits of car to sell, but if someone wants anything, they can either pay me outside of ebay (like i've done with pretty much everything off the car) or they can look elsewhere. It's got to the point where i'm expecting the worst every time i accept paypal. The only problem doing it this way, is you lose a few potential customers, but its better than being treated like this!
