The Good..The Bad..and the downright ugly

PNY XLR8 GTX 295 will be operational mid next week :D
Single PCB, brand new so I have high expections, tomorrow my weakest pc gets an upgrade.
Has a AMD 64 X2 4000+ (2Ghz) at the moment, being upgraded to a 6000+ - every little helps.

Mid next week...you either have the patience of a saint or your legs are in plaster!!...Indeed every little does help...which will be my line in the morning to the bank manager :D

Toxic, there may be one for sale soon :) If I get the Asrock working ok.

And when I get to #1 in Folding I'm gonna come play Seti for a while :p

Blimey! i better play it for all its worth with the bank in the morning, just pass me the nod when and if your ready ..ooooo bright shiny new things in boxes oooo :D

LOL :D card does not arrive till then, within 10 minutes of it passing through my front door it will be downloading work - better ? :p

Or if wearing socks hit your nose on the step as you fall running (I haven't ever done this :()

The humain brain can make decisions in milliseconds you should have used the box or prized possesion as a cushion and claime don the insurance:D

 that will ruffle some feathers :D

Yeah that should slice off time needed to stomp planetary peeps....one more soul saved from eternal damnation :D

Not when my brain is in new stuff mode can only sit and bounce waiting for delivery and then rushing to get it fitted always have trainers on now more grip when cornering to go up to rig :D:D

Also I'm slooooow

That will be interesting...

Seller has agreed to take my card back and test it, so when I get back off holiday I will send it to him and in the meantime it is crunching away on one core :D
Thanks for your kind offer toxic, but I think I will be OK for a couple of weeks
Once I have the refund I will be in the market (again) for a 295, though Im going to stick to single PCB as people have suggested that there might be a problem with the dual PCB version over on the seti forums.
Does anyone have a dual PCB version in here that has been working ok?

Toxic - will give you the heads up when I have the refund and we can co-ordinate our buying strategy so that don't bid against each other..

Thats good news at least the seller is willing, a lot more than most would do.
I had allmost discounted 295's but will be selling off bits n bobs on the bay in next 2 weeks so will see how it goes.
Just relax, enjoy your holiday and co ordinate your plan of attack when you get back :D

with regards to the win7 and win64xp machine sluggishness, it could also be a default thread priority within the systems?
Thanks for that Grimgoth, but am not sure what is default thread priority? How would i go about changing it to make the machine a little more responsive....much appreciated :)

Right click on the task bar, select Task Manager, select Processes Tab.
From there you can right click on any process and adjust priority - proceed with caution.

Regarding output:

The thing to think about is actual Cuda Cores.......

Therefore the 3 x GTX260's (648 Cores) won't be that far behind the 3 x GTX285's (720 Cores) as they both run around the same Shader Clock Speed.

Thats why my 2 x GTX275/GTS250 Hybrid's are on par with 3 x GTX285's

If I leave my rig alone it can produce well above 45k ppd and the wee rig (with 2 x GTS250's) are around 20k ppd. But as my main rig is only used for crunching around 60/70% of the time my output drops.

Thanks for that Loudbob much appreciated, those hybrids are certainly giving you the bang for buck! I have finally gotten it through my thick skull it is the cuda cores i should be thinking in terms of.
The price of 295's had me wavering a bit but if i had a full house of those then i could comfortably retire 1 machine, yes there would be a larger power draw but i think overall i would still save a fair amount on electricity.
Not long to go now before the Planetary folk feel our thunder :D:D

Will do just that Mr Halz and see if i can't squeeze a little more response out of the thing.
Have you assumed the buying position yet....as in deck chair, flask of coffee and hob nobs positioned strategically adjacent to the letterbox?

Preparing new rig for the GTX 295's.........woop's, plural, that slipped out ;)

Trying to acquire a QX9770, so if any one has one for sale .....

:eek: Plural indeed! Blimey you are intent, it's how many more than one i'd be interested in, thats going to be awesome output for sure i wish you all the best with it :D
Can't help with the processor will have a q6600 on the go in next week but thats about it.

You should know by now that I dont give everything away :p

Question - 2 individual GPU's in one case, 1 in a PCIe x16 slot and the other in a x8 slot. Would the one in the x16 slot run a lot hotter than the other?

The top (x16) card runs extremely hot - no errors though.

Bit open ended that question..
It would depend on your fan positions and have you got any other hardware close to the top one - PSU, HDD's etc which might account for the heat increase
Are they the same model? Are the clocks the same, has the lower one got a custom (ie non-reference) cooling solution?

Just want to get something right in my head about these 295's, apologies for repeating myself but best to check now rather than sorry later.
Theres a dual and single pcb, the single pcb has the fan in the middle so i cant see how it would be able to exhaust all the heat outside of the case, if the heat was exhausted into the case any fans that were pulling cool air in would need to be changed to exhaust warm air and the push pull configuration for the h50 would be best which way?
The dual pcb do they exhaust all there heat outside of the case? If so i would not want to mix single and dual because that would give me a headache trying to configure the air intake/exhaust combination.
Any thoughts/suggestions greatfully received :confused::)

Both cards are identical and running at the same speed, plenty of space around the outer edges but inbetween the cards space is almost non existant.
But the card shells are shaped to allow air to the fans (at the rear of the cards) even if they are almost touching each other.
I'm sure you know the shape I mean, I have not had the side on the case for some time.
As I said before I'm not getting any errors but I was wondering how long it will last running 24/7 at those temps - cant leave my finger on it for more than than a few seconds.
At one point I put a fan on it at almost point blank range but if made no difference whatsoever.
Think I will rotate them ever so often to even out wear and tear.
