I know the answer is probably "out there" - but I also knew the people of OcUK would have the answer!
Currently using a GTX 275 card in my machine.
Have been offered an ATI 5770 for a good price (mate who has upgraded to something with a silly price tag).

I'm assuming the 5770 is the better card of the two - but by much?
Is it worth the upgrade or just keep the GTX 275 and upgrade to something even better once prices drop?

The 5770 is dx11 friendly, the 275 isn't. At stock settings the 275 is the faster card. The 5770 should overclock very well, I can't comment about the 275's ability to overclock. Would have thought it would be a reasonably good clocker though not as good as the 5770.

A good overclock on a 5770 can reach 4890 speeds, or thereabouts.

Save some extra money and hope that the 5850 comes down in price once/if the $ exchange rate gets better,if not still save up and get a 5850. They are decent little clockers, can reach upto the 5870 speeds. But nothing wront with the 275 at the moment, only afew games are DX11, hopefully over 6 months more will come out then i suggest upgrade then :)

Going 5770 from GTX275 would be side-stepping at best (downgrading slightly in fact). If going 5770, it would be solely for dx11. But frankly, the "dx11" at the moment is a bit overrated, as current dx11 games are only using very light amount of tessellations and graphic wise is not really that huge improvement over dx10.

I would say you'd better off keep using your GTX275, and wait for games to mature to the point of using more tessellations, then you can consider picking up a 2nd gen dx11 range card or something.

P.S. ATI5000 series are known to be not particularly powerful in handling tessellations...ATI6000 series will hopefully overcome this weakness.

4870 is slightly faster than a 5770, i think you can work it out from there.

Not any more, with drivers as they are now its more level with a 4890.

Saying that, I wouldn't change from a GTX275 to a 5770, it'd be a waste of time. Either go to a 5850/470 or higher.

GTX 275 is definitely quicker than a 5770...and with both clocked to max...the 275 still comes out ahead by a good margin. It would be a downgrade or sidestep at best.

The 275 is like a 4890 and faster than a 5770 so upgrades that are worthwhile would be a 5850 , 470 , 5870 , 480 , 5970 in that order depending on what you want to spend.

On the latest 197 drivers the GTX275 should show the 5770 a clean pair of heels and you should manage a reasonable amount of overclocking.

Forget the 5770, I say wait for the next gen of cards at the end of the year, I have two 275's in SLI and they work well still.
