I've got my driving test in 2 weeks and assuming i pass i'll be wanting to insure my car and be otr the same day.

It's a 1.2l 8v mk2 Punto and the extent of my mods will be to tint the windows, maybe take the side strips off, and possibly drop it in the future. I'm looking for a decent insurance company that won't rob me blind (especially with the 1st payment). I'm 22 and the car will be in a private car park right in front of my house. Any recommendations?

I've been recommended Rentacre (spelling?) by a few mates but thought it was worth asking around here too.

Obviously that would reduce the insurance cost but assuming i'm going to do the mods anyway, what insurance company recommendations would folk make?

Adrian Flux are good for me. In a good postcode area I got a quote of £1,300 on a group 17 car with no NCB at 21 (NCB is used on another car).

Edit: See you're in Bradford... good luck with that. :D

Join Puntomk2, they have some sort of we will beat any insurance quote + 10% if your a member on there.

I'd just take the side strips off though and maybe light tints on the rear, anything more and it looks like a slow barry-ed up chav wagon, which it would be.

Either way first time driver, Bradford and mods means you will be robbed blind, expect £1.5k+.

FYI my standard 8v Punto cost me £680~ to insurance fully comp at 17 having just passed. Adding tints would have added £2.1k

Pft I had two accidents and 0NCB and an actually good postcode and it cost me £800 for a grp16 car. :p

Yeah i know it's gonna be expensive because i'm Bradford, which (statistically) houses the most uninsured drivers in the UK (around 40% iirc), unfortunately. Which puts us honest folk in a dire situation....

I managed to find TPFT insurance for about 1.4k on Swift Cover. That's the cheapest once i've found as of yet.

I wouldn't say it will be chavvy - i'm nowhere near "chavvy" and it's not the image i'm aiming for. I just want to do minor changes really, nothing drastic. It's not like i'm putting a massive loud exhaust on it and bright green vinyls. Also, smoked rear lights will definitely add to the "chav" aspect, expecially on a Punto. I won't be doing that ;)

Light tints = Rear windows tinted very lightly

NOT

Tinting the rear lights.

Lowering a car is usually done to either improve handling (which the Punto doesn't need as it's a shopping cart) or to make you look scene and 'euro' which is pointless on a Mk2 8v - you end up just driving round a stupidly slow, stupidly low small hatchback.

Remove side strips, sporting OEM alloys and slightly tint the rears if you really want.

Personally I'd leave it standard, the Punto is a cheap and cheerful car, no point spending thousands extra just to insure a 30mm drop. Start saving for something worth modding if your into that sort of thing.

Usful tip 56

Keep it standard
run it for a few years
build up no claims
buy a better car

Simples

Mod it and uncle Rozzer will keep his eye out for you.

Seriously, don't bother modding a 1.2l Punto ...Get a 1.9 Stilo if you must have something Fiat and Cheap. Atleast it would go allright...

Another note i payed 1.9k for a MK1 punto 1.1L TPFT Insurance. @ 17

Dont take the sidestrips off.

The other day I came back to my parents 530d to find some **** had scrapped ALL ALONG the side of the car. Luckily the damage was limited to just the bump strips. Had they not been there it would have needed a complete respray of both doors. The painted sidestrips are also peppered with numerous little marks which, without them, would have been dents in the door.

Manufacturers removing these sidestrips on newer cars is utterly ridiculous imho.
