To borrow a line from Lopez....

I know, I've considered putting a discreet "[TW]Fox approved" sticker on it somewhere

This would increase its resale value by 1.72% & add a further 2mpg at a steady 57mph as long as you took the rear seats out. (Allegedly:D)

And now I've gone and killed it. :(

It's had a noisy gearbox since I got it which I knew was the input shaft bearing, common fault on these. I ignored it over the winter because It was too cold and wet to sort it. The noise started getting worse a week or two ago so I pulled the gearbox out and took it apart. The bearing that I suspected was indeed dead, everything else actually seemed in better condition than I expected. Got a new bearing and started putting the gearbox back together.

Then I made the fatal error. I bolted the two halves of the gearbox together but forgot to release a spring clip which locates one of the output shaft bearings. Net result was a mangled clip but more importantly the groove in the casing that it runs in was also pretty knackered. Tried my best to work around it and get everything back together but it's no good. Tried the car today and the 'box isn't well. Essentially the output shaft is offset slightly from where it should be. Need to decide what to do with the car now options are:

Pick up another box and fit it, although I'm not sure I can be bothered.
Try and get it running well enough to stick it back through the auction for some other sucker to buy.
Sell it for spares or repairs via eBay/ClubVR4 and try to get back most of what the car owes me.
Break it myself, although I haven't really got the time, space or motivation.

I'm really kicking myself though as it's entirely my own fault that the box is knackered, I'm fully confident that if I'd released the clip properly it'd all be fine. :( Still, lesson learned

Good cars those, looks like a bargain for that money even if you spend a few quid on it.

Hardest part is finding one, most V6s are Autos. Have found an FTO box on the bay for a good price which is the same box but with different ratios (5th and final drive are different AFAIK). Temptation is to get that and either fit it as is or build a frankenbox out of the pair of them. Will have to do the maths and work out what effect the different ratios will have, if it'll be useable then I'll just use it as is rather than risk breaking another box :p

Main reason I'm not keen on sorting it out is that there are other niggly issues which whilst pretty insignificant are just giving me a bit of a downer on the whole thing.

Staggeringly cheap. No room whatsoever for criticism at that money.

Wat? I paid just £604 more for my car and you call it a shed at every possible opportunity! :p

Damn, that's not good! :(

Have a word with Duo on ClubVR4, he's got my old blue saloon, and I think he might be breaking that, the gearbox is a goodun (I replaced the input shaft bearing on that when I got it from elnevio).

Hope you can easily get it up and running again!

Cheers, have PM'd him.

Couldn't get hold of another box in the end so a few weeks ago I made the decision to pull the old one out again and have another go at fixing it. Took the old knackered snap ring out, cleaned up the groove as best I could and put a new snap ring in and it seemed to go together ok. Finally got everything back together tonight and have just been out for a test run. Clutch hydraulics seem a bit ropey although everything works, not sure if I've damaged a seal in in the slave cylinder or whether it was always like that and I didn't notice. Either way I'm back on the road at last!
