Hey everyone,

Ive just finished Uni and am currently unemployed (looking for a "proper" job now)

The thing is im going on holiday in a month or so's time and am looking to get a credit card as im told its a better way of spending abroad.

Does anyone know any good student credit cards? Will me being unemployed affect my application process?

Thanks :)

Surely you can only apply for a student credit card if you're a....student?
Did you not have a student account whilst you were at university?

I applied for, and got, a Nationwide Current Account and a Nationwide Credit Card with a 2k limited whilst I was at University in order to use in Australia. I did have a part time job though not one which paid a great deal.

Well im offically still a student hense why I want to do it sooner rather than later

Student account? Im with Barclays if thats what you mean but they dont have any sort of student credit cards...

Well ok, can I apply for a standard credit card if im unemployed?

Got one with Natwest while I was a student with a £350 limit, no questions ask. I've got in the habbit of using it a lot for some reason, and just paying stuff back on it. Started for the insurance on online purchases, now it's my main card (besides getting cash out, of course).

I think it helps with my credit rating? Shrug. Either way, you wont have a problem getting one.

Not necessarily, as a lot of them will take a % charge for every transaction, and then give you a poor exchange rate too.

I believe there are some bank cards that don't take a % though ...

The cheapest way to spend abroad is probably to take cash, which you got at a competitive exchange rate in the UK before you go. This however has difficulties with regards to security, particularly if you were intending to spend a lot.

Rgds

Get a normal credit card. At the moment im with Lloyds TSB student credit card, and its 20%apr.... Its a lot higher than the average cards. I only use mine just to build up some credit rating and pay it off in time :D

Ive got a Student account and Student CC with lloyds and a Virgin normal credit card.

Lloyds phoned me about something to do with my normal account and said I could have a student CC aswell, so took it :D Although I never use it due to getting flyer points on the virgin one :)

oh and ive always had a job so they didnt really mind :)

I got a credit card once I was 18 from RBS, no question asked. £500 credit limit.
It's often maxed out. I've only ever bought one thing on it and the rest has been cash withdrawals.
It was a mighty foolish decision!
Managed not to use it in quite a while though, so that's good.

Amusingly i got rejected for a halifax student credit card, yet i have a BMI platinum mastercard and an american express.

Though halifax have given me a 1k overdraft, hopefully will have 2k for next year

I have a natwest credit card. They offered it to me at the beginning of the year when they upgraded my solo card to a visa. I haven't used it since I got it, so they have decided to cancel it. So much for building up my credit rating....
