Indeed this thread shows why they'd be a bad idea. Only just started page two and some of these are hardly family friendly.

I actually think we should get rid of the avatars entirely and instead make our names a little bit bigger and add some links to social networks etc in the avatar area.

The signature and name identifies the person and the signature can change. If the avatar can also change then it does not help me identify the person I am talking to.

I personally hate custom avatars as they distract from the substance of the message

One of the black and white ones like we have now. Keeps it mature, and I quite like them.
