What is broken about Britain?

I'm writing an essay at the moment with the question 'Is Britain Broken?'

To spice it up a little I'd like some ideas from the public on what the main topics that fall under the term 'Broken Britain' - ie. failing schools, rising public debt ect.

Thanks in advance. :)

lack of national pride? Britain isn't broken, we're just going through tough times like many countries do!

Britian is not broken.

the government is broken. the system is broken.

Violence is at the lowest it has ever been, take no notice of the police's statistics, they have to say violence is increasing or how else would they justify a £15 billion budget.

People are more intelligent than ever, irrespective of the pathetic and mismanaged education system.

The economy is broken, here the population can take some "blame" for buying things with money than they don't have. But that is a whole different discussion. The economy is broken because of the monopoly over currency and the interest payments the government is forced to pay when it "loans" money that it does not need to loan because it could create it itself.

The government likes to blame the population and not take responsibility, from what i can see the population is doing alright, standard of living is the highest it has ever been, in spite of the government taking all their money.

We are no longer a production economy - we're a service economy. Britain used to be one of the world's greatest engineering hubs and now we don't make/sell anything that can't be bought cheaper/better elsewhere. I blame Thatcher.

And thats a bad thing?

Service industries tend to bring in a lot more money than manufacturing industries.

We are leaders in Research and Development and other high tech industries as well.

A lot of people now want something for nothing - or they think someone owes them. And a lot of people just don't know how to work anymore - or understand authority, rules and especially respect or pride. And our increasing obsession with drinking too much.

Pride and respect for people/things is very difficult to find in the upcoming generation of kids - and it's understandable due to the majority of their parents either not being there (due to the single Mum generation) or parents/fathers out boozing/socialising or enjoying themselves whilst their offspring are sitting at home every night with their WII and a 12 year old babysitting cousin.

Spend any amount of time in any Asian country to see what respect for teachers, parents, relatives and even fellow citizens should really be like.

We're too busy offering our services and making much more money from those services instead. I thank Thatcher.

As a country I believe we are too eager to help regarding trivial issues without tackling the big picture. I also think our human rights are too generous regarding certain things.

Yet we are still around the 6th largest manufacturer in the world, only behind the likes of China, Japan and the USA. Go figure... ;)

Either way we don't make cheap low profit high quantity goods any more no, however we have a service industry that makes far more money than the old manufacturing industry did and a manufacturing industry now that makes high tech high profit goods.

Why make shoes and clothes when we can make weapons and satellites?
