The Tories & our roads- What do you think ?

lane rental ~= congestion charging.

I like the idea of charging foreign HGVs road tax.

I think we're still going to be shafted, just in different ways.

lane rental ~= congestion charging.

I'm not familiar with the Tory manifesto but with it being described as "Crack down on road works, introducing lane rental for some of our busiest roads" it sounds to me more like a scheme where anyone doing roadworks is charged a daily rate for any area of road surface which is unavailable for use for the duration of their work. Whilst this would cut down on unnecesary road closures I can also see it leading to substandard repairs as jobs are rushed to get the road open again.

In general though the coalition has given them free reign to ignore any pre-election promises which they decide they don't want to implement with the excuse of it "being a concession to the libdems".

"Crack down on road works"

Does this include unnecessary road works too? The A16 where i live gets resurfaced every 12 months which is not only a pain in the ass but is totally not needed. It's the town center that needs the attention.

We will just carry on business as usual, that being extract as much as possible from the motorist while putting a minimum back in.

They seriously need a shake up of the money spent on roads.

Apparantly in our County.. if the money isn't all used up that they are allocated.. its cut back the next year.

So they end up throwing it all away before the year end on pointless roadworks.. dumb *****

That's typical of any department in any public sector organisation really

I doubt much will change.
More recharge points, Battery technology on it's own is not the fuel of the future. Decide what the fuel of the future is and start rolling that out. don't waste money building recharge stations when it's useless for most people. People are not going to pay for a car that only does 100 or so miles before needing several hour recharge. When people often do much longer distances, even though it's infrequent.

The Tories never did this when they were in last time.

When they were booted petrol was something like 55p a litre and road tax was....... £125 a year for everything I believe.
Your driving test was just a driving test, you could just take a motorcycle test and get riding, no insurance tax, no SORN fines, no having to have photocard licenses that needed renewing every x amount of years, very few speed cameras and speed humps, no 20 limits, virtually no 40mph dual carriage ways and definitely no smegging flapjack.

Interesting statements they have made, will be very interesting to see what they actually do now!

Revenue generating speed cameras need to be taken down but I got no problem with cameras being put up in built up areas around schools etc.
As for road condition, like most towns in the UK Bristol has some shockingly bad roads, ive buckled 2 alloys in the last 10 years with bad pot holes :(

Heres hoping they will sort it out but im sure motorists will just end up getting shafted in some other way......

Tory Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond has confirmed the new government's intention to withdraw all central funding for new fixed speed cameras. Local authorities will still be able to fund cameras, but any revenues will go to the treasury, and not into local coffers.

Hammond has also confirmed his intention to introduce the fuel price stabiliser pledged before the election, in which fuel duty paid to the treasury will rise and fall to counter fluctuations in the oil price, although no further detail has been released on the scope of the scheme.

And do you not think had the conservatives remained in power, as those technologies became more wide spread they would not have used them?

Of course they would, and as for price increases, well, i cant remember road tax or petrol ever going down as time moved on under any government.

For what its worth i have always been a Conservative, but im realistic enough to not believe for one minute they intend to turn their back on the fantastic cash cow that the motorist has become in this country.

Hence me saying (in my opinion) it will be business as usual fleecing the motorist.

Shouldn't just be HGV's, I got charged motorway tax to drive through Austria and Slovakia, if it keeps traffic down then I'm all for it.

Infact the Slovakian system is good anyway, no road tax if you only stay local, but you do have to pay for road tax if you drive cross-country/motorway.

If their lips are moving, they are lying.
When their lips arent moving, they are thinking of lying.

I dont trust anything they say till they proove it.
