Coalition Government Con/Lib had agreed to rise VAT from 17.5% to 20.0% by end of 2011 when the emergency budget to be announced within 50 days say the latest BBC news.

Once again, David Cameron is lied to the British Peoples when he told Labour Party that he will not rise any VAT under conservative government.

Thank alots Tory/Lib!

Bring back Labour Party !!!!

This has yet to be publicly announced by the PM. Also he never once said he wouldn't raise VAT, he said he was against it but we have to get the national debt which Labour created under control.

Labour would have pumped up fuel duty and added on another 100 stealth taxes onto every working family in the UK and added the Jobs Tax.

Please do not bring back labour.

Well for one it hasn't been agreed to public knowledge yet.

And good raising the VAT is a good way of getting income in to help them combat the deficit. Besides, Labour intended to something similar immediately after the reduction to 15%.

While your at it thank Labour for a lot of the crap we are in now

Stop scaremongering. It's a survey of "influential economists" none of whom have been named. It's a bad bit of journalism by the BBC, not a Con-Lib government policy. (yet)

Lol blaming labour. They probs couldnt avoid it just like the conservatives wont be able to avoid the same problems. New party wont help the problems imo.

Did the conservatives actually say they weren't planning to raise VAT? I thought it was well known that every party would have to do this at some point.

VAT was gonna be increased no matter what, anyone who somehow thinks that the other parties wouldn't is deluded.

On a plus side I worked out an increase of VAT to 20% and an increase to the personal allowance to £10k would still leave me better off :D

What was wrong with poll tax - we all pay the same for a loaf of bread, we all pay the same for petrol, we all pay the same for electricity. Why shouldn't we all pay the same for policing, rubbish collection etc.

Sure 'rich people' might live in bigger houses but they will only use more services if they have more people under the roof in which case they would have paid more poll tax ?

It was a simple *FAIR* policy unlike council tax which is complicated and unfair. Why should a family of 6 in a small house pay less than an elderly retired couple in a big house when they will use more services ?

Onoes! Being used to 19% VAT here myself, I don't think I would notice such a big difference anyhow when buying things, 25-30ish quid extra on a 1000 quid tv or whatever... If you have 1000 quid spare for a new plasma tv you probably have 30 spare quid anyhow. I think Vat increases are FAR more fair than other taxes as it affects everyone equally by percentage. Rather have a VAT raise than the tax on fuels ( yes I know VAT also affect petrol, but at least it affects everyone not just motorits!) or income tax raised.

Nothing wrong with it, it WAS a much fairer tax idea ... unfortunately it wasn't socialist so the socialists bitched

I think (bare in mind my age) it was as millions of people were being expected to pay for something they hadn't before, so both hadn't budgeted for it and, frankly, didn't want to.

The joke is, twas much fairer/better.

Anyone not expecting rises in taxation whoever got elected has been asleep for the last year or so. The government must act fast or face rising interest rates in order to sell gilts (national debt).

The choice is paying higher interest rates on all debt (as in Greece) or tackle the massive problem with government income v spending.

PS I liked the poll tax too, but it became the focus for all the pent-up anger (and there was an awful lot of it, you shouldn't underestimate this) against the Thatcher government. It wasn't a particularly rational time.

IIRC we have one of the lowest VAT in europe.
VAT increase across the board will effect everyone, so if they do increase it to 20% it will just add another 2.5% to inflation.

Poll Tax - though everyone pays the same it is a regressive tax (like VAT), so the poorer you are the more the tax you'll pay (in proportion to your earnings)
