anyone disapointed with 5000s series

I think your missing the point mate, so no need to get so fed up
we aren't buying from an American retailer. We are referring to buying in this country. Just because a lot of stuff by ocuk gets bought in from the states in $ we only buy stuff in £ so any comparisons there ate irrelevant. Consumers don't care where the suppliers get thier stuff from, that's the suppliers problem. And if the suppliers can't provide good price comparisons in £ from generation to generation then it's jot the consumers fault as they didn't choose to buy stiff from abroad, the suppliers did! The consumers dame to you direct. Else we would all just buy direct from abroad ourselves. The $ to £ is ocuk issue. It's good for consumers to be aware, so thank you. But you have to understand that ocuk have to provide us with products that ate comparable in £ between gen to gen.

If we still had $2 to the pound at 5850 launch they would have only been £150 to buy instead of the £197 I paid for mine.

So what do you suggest they do? Sell at a loss? Not sell them at all? Let us import them one at a time and end up paying more for shipping and handling fees?

dont forget companies have struggled through a global recession also. prices are higher for everything, design is more complex.

when I step (which i will soon) from my 'came with the box' 256mb 8600GT with its 16 unified shaders, 256mb of 128bit ram running 400mhz ddr2 (i know !) I can expect a 5770 to blitz it ! so it depends on what your moving from that counts.

Im guessing the point some people are making is that for the big new numbers with these cards in specs, there not hugely infront of the best of the last generation and yet their more expensive.

thats life, you just know that these cards are a good interim until the proper hardcore 6 series is out :)

From what I've read, credit seems well deserved for ATI's efforts in reducing temps and to some degree noise with the 5000 series.

8800GTS 640MB to hd5850 1GB = splooge. Anyone got a moist towelette?

Also, hd4670 512MB to hd5770 1GB = "oh, oh I came again."

I was sooo close to buying an Asus 5850 yesterday, but the rep never rang me back as promised. So sod it, gonna wait for the 6xxx series. My trusty 8800GT will have to plough on for a bit longer.

GTX 285 - 20736 Mpixels/s, 51840 Mtexels/s

HD5870 - 27,200 Mpixels/s, 68000 Mtexel/s.

It's a bit faster, but not much. It uses 50w less at idle and 25w less under load.
Also DX11.

No not at all. They are terribly overhyped and I was a fool for buying one over my 285GTX. Not at all impressed.
Well, that's what you get for not being objective.

I went from a 4850 to a 5850. I am incredibly happy. Everything just runs perfectly at whatever spec. Install a game, set graphic options to maximum and go

LOL! Where do you think graphic cards come from? That is right, abroad, try and buy any ATI/NV card made in the UK if you don't want to deal with exchange rates :)

I went from an 8800GT

Im on a HD5770

Running at Core - 1100 and 1400 on the mem :D

My temps never exceed 55'C SO YOU KNO :D

And I have not tried going higher thats what 250mhz overclock on the Core and a 200 mhz overclock on the mem.

SO HELL YEAH its worth it and it barely draws the same power as the 8800gt i mean is GREAT!

Can't fault the technology but paying the same price for the same fps as a year ago sux, I don't care for the reasons why it's moe expensive, I'm a consumer :)

i dont think there profit margin is that tight, i reckon there making a killing on these cards cos nvidia offers no competition, i think nvidia would do the the same.

As a consumer we are the ones that suffer when there is no competition.

Calm down! It wasn't meant as an attack. Just a reasoned response to the comment the the original poster was getting "fed up" of explaining about exchange rates.

And I certainly don't have the answers, and I appreciate it is something us consumers have to accept now (being me make fk all in this country now).

Nothing wrong with me expressing my views though :)

I'll wait for 6xxx series. Maybe this hung parliament can get our money back on track by then (rofl)

I wouldn't count on it. VAT rise planned will only hurt us. Not to mention the huge spending cuts will mean more job losses. They already announced that all school and hospital projects that are not progressed past a certain stage have been halted to the tune of £3.5 billion. Our deficit may get Slashed, but at what cost....
