F1 2010 - 3rd dev video on weather now live

I really cant wait for this. I hope it shapes up to be everything they tell us it is.

Love how theres puddles which get bigger or dry out as the weather changes making tyre choice a real factor.

All my scepticism aside, I wonder what's the point of weather dynamics when the developers expect their target audience to drive 3-5 lap races? Ok, weather certainly affects the outcome of a 5 lap race but still.. it's not long enough race for things to even stabilize after the rain has begun/finished.

Yeah I know you can tune the length of a race through custom race option but as I said, they don't expect their target audience to drive custom races anyway but use the default settings.. that's why they are default. Can you tune the length of races in career mode? 20-30 lap races for example? In my opinion a whole lot of effort for almost nothing compared to tuning the physics properly.

I guess it helps with marketing at least..

I haven't heard them say that, but what I have heard is that the game will be playable by people wanting both an arcade experience as well as a more simulation experience. They're developing the simulation side of it making it customisable down to an arcade experience. So for your comment above, that level of detail won't make much difference for the 5 lap arcade players, but for those wanting a more simulation experience with a full race, it will :). At the moment it looks fantastic but until we get some independent play testing/reviews, we won't truly know.

Geoff Crammonds is still the best F1 game I ever played, one of the very few F1 games I ever played which had realistic damage and the ability to drive full length races through a season. Used to love sitting down for a few hours to do a 60+ lap race and have to take into account my pitstops, other teams pitstops and changing weather/track conditions.

Would like this to be good, but I suspect its still going to be too arcadey for my liking. Come on Geoff, come back out of retirement !

Yes you can if that's how you want to play career mode.

We fully expect there to be plenty of people buying the game who want to race longer than 3-5 lap races, as like you said there wouldn't really be that much point putting so much effort into a fully dynamic weather system if people only wanted short races :)

We've just released two new screens as well today, here you go:

I feel codemasters are more then capable of producing a decent F1 racing game if they wanted to, however I feel due to market audience and marketing it will be geared towards the majority and be mostly a 3 – 5 lap arcade racer as default.

What they will look to maybe do, and the indications are showing this, they will provide the ability to customise the game to be more tailored towards those who want longer, more strategic races with full pit stops, changeable weather conditions and qualifying etc..

The problem codemasters face with this game is that they are concentrating on just one aspect of racing, Formula 1. With their past few titles, dirt, dirt 2 and Grid, they were throwing in all types of racing..

For example, Grid has an excellent Le Mans event, however its set over 24 hours, truncated to 12 minutes in game, you get maybe 3 – 4 laps of this historic event in any class, the 12 minutes half way through goes to night, and then back to day, no pit stops yet, once this is completed, you get to then maybe race open seats. Variety is plenty in the last codemaster racer games. At the sacrifice of enjoying a full season of say – Touring Cars, or Formula 3000.

So, with this title, its all about F1, full season, full career and therefore if codemasters stick to the old and tried method of just allowing 2 -3 laps like for example Grid’s Le Mans race, then it’ll just fail. I would think many looking over this title are hoping for the next Grand Prix 4 – I think we’re going to be a little disappointed, however I’m openly optimistic and hope this will be a full, all bells F1 racing game for PC.

Ah rotter023 has in fact just confirmed what I wrote.. lol I spent so long writing that, he replied in the meantime..

Those screenshots also look excellent...

Actually, rotter023. Talking about Grid's Le Mans races.... Man, get the team who worked on that game to release a mod to allow a longer race, in all the races on that game, the Le Mans Races with an Aston DBR9 is just fantastic... lol it needs to last for at least 30 laps with at least one pit stop... That would be amazing. Such potential, sadly not realised..!! Good game though... reason I feel codemasters can pull of a decent F1 game if the want to...

You and I are on the same wave length!

I still play GP4 religiously.
