I feel codemasters are more then capable of producing a decent F1 racing game if they wanted to, however I feel due to market audience and marketing it will be geared towards the majority and be mostly a 3 – 5 lap arcade racer as default.
What they will look to maybe do, and the indications are showing this, they will provide the ability to customise the game to be more tailored towards those who want longer, more strategic races with full pit stops, changeable weather conditions and qualifying etc..
The problem codemasters face with this game is that they are concentrating on just one aspect of racing, Formula 1. With their past few titles, dirt, dirt 2 and Grid, they were throwing in all types of racing..
For example, Grid has an excellent Le Mans event, however its set over 24 hours, truncated to 12 minutes in game, you get maybe 3 – 4 laps of this historic event in any class, the 12 minutes half way through goes to night, and then back to day, no pit stops yet, once this is completed, you get to then maybe race open seats. Variety is plenty in the last codemaster racer games. At the sacrifice of enjoying a full season of say – Touring Cars, or Formula 3000.
So, with this title, its all about F1, full season, full career and therefore if codemasters stick to the old and tried method of just allowing 2 -3 laps like for example Grid’s Le Mans race, then it’ll just fail. I would think many looking over this title are hoping for the next Grand Prix 4 – I think we’re going to be a little disappointed, however I’m openly optimistic and hope this will be a full, all bells F1 racing game for PC.
