It's my Dad's 55th birthday next Tuesday, and I'd like to buy him some nice wine, a subject I know very little about.

I've subtley asked about what he prefers, but only managed to get as far as something french and red out of him.

Can someone with a bit of knowledge in the area recommend me one or a few bottles and somewhere to get them from please? Budget is £30 - £40.

Cheers,

PK!

A selection would be better than just one bottle, it'll go further and can be appreciated more.

If he likes white grab some Sainsbury's Sancerre, lovely and complex on the palette, very drinkable - £13 bottle. I drink three bottles of this stuff most Friday nights, just love it.

If Red, I'd recommend Marks & Spencers Villa Peironte Barolo 2005 at around £20.

Both are very palatable, you can't fail with a bottle of each.

For the Red: Marks & Spencer St Aubin 1er Cru 2006
and someone mentioned champagne....Get this from Majestic: 'R' de Ruinart NV. Very, very good champagne. Bargain at £30

Thanks for the ideas gents. I think I'm gonna get him a selection, gives me a better chance of getting something right!
