Im using virgin media 20mb broadband but was going to save some money and get the 10mb if its fast enought,
Is 10mb broadband ok for online gaming and downloading demos and using BBC iplayer etc?
or should i pay the extra and stick to 20mb
thanks :)

10mb is fine, but 20mb is better/faster. I only have 8mb personally, only slowdown is notice is sometimes iPlayer takes a while to buffer.

Up to you - if you don't mind paying a bit extra, go for it!

10mb will be fine. Just remember the traffic management that Virgin uses before you download demos or use iPlayer :)

Online gaming was perfectly fine with my 2MB connection, didnt see much of a difference when I was upgraded to 10MB.

512k is more than enough for online gaming, so 10 meg will be fine. Just be sure to avoid Virgins traffic shaping in peak hours, if you exceed your download quota not only does your speed drop, your ping time increases dramatically.

Well i went from vergin media 20meg to 50 and my ping in games a halved from 40-60 to 20-30 so it is worth getting faster a connection also when ur hosting games helps a lot then to.

That's more to do with a higher priority with Virgin exchanges and better infrastructure used for 50 meg though, it's not because of the speed. There will be no ping difference between 10 and 20meg as Virgin treat them with the same priority.

An online game will likely use around 20-30kb/sec, a fraction of the bandwidth available to 10meg.

This.

10mb or 20mb wont make a difference for gaming. As most people have pointed out, ping is far more important due to the tiny amount of data you send, if anything upload speed is far more critical than download speed.

When you get throttled by Virgin you're in for a world of pain. :(

It's not so much about Mb/s as it is PING for online gaming. I'm running 8 but constantly have NAT Strict on MW2 and Forza 3, but then again if you get hosts that are close to you you can get away with 1Mb.

in my last house i was on 20mb cable virgin it was nice , but now i have 10mb o2 and that ****es all over it in every aspect.

as above its not just about speed its also about connection quality.

It's not really much of an issue, I generally tend to get my game demos between 1-2pm and I have never been hit with any form of management from Virgin in the evening as the limit resets at 4pm, giving another 1.5Gb allowance.

As mentioned, upload is what really makes a difference to gaming nowadays. People were getting the same pings with 512k 8 years ago as they do now with 50mb. Only thing that can possibly increase/reduce your ping is actually a side-effect of all the faster connections - interleaving. Theoretically interleaving allows a more stable connection at a higher speed but increases ping times, some ISP's allow the option to switch to fastpath but bare in mind it can make your connection less stable, and also make no difference to your ping at all or nothing worth noting. Its very dependant on your line.

For hosting games, higher upload the better (2.5MB Bethere upload here, 24MB down :D).

doesnt matter what line u get if your ping is too high your gonna experience lag. virgin is fine on 50mb myself and experience about 25-30 usually, 20mb was about 40
