There seems to be a huge variation in the price of Photoshop CS4 on the internet from £150-£999 and all the usual PC shops I look at dont stock anything but upgrade versions. So where did u guys get your copy of photoshop from and given the huge pricetag do most of u just use free software such as paint.net for image editing?

I am only starting out in photography so maybe photoshop is overkill but let me have ur suggestions please.

TIA

I would imagine most people either source their copy from work, or seek 'alternatively distributed copies', though few would admit to the latter.

How many posts do you see where people are agonising over a piece of kit for a couple of hundred quid, yet have seemingly dropped twice as much at least on a copy of CS4...

Mine came from the Adobe online shop, it still is the single most expensive piece of software I’ve bought but you have to jump on the train at some point in time. As to the cost well just treat it as another lens. But as mentioned before there are some great educational discounts available.

You can save money by signing up for a cheap open university course, get the student id and then buy the student edition.

Mad but true !

You might as well pirate it, because the licence for the student version is for educational purposes only, it does not allow you to produce commercial work and you cannot upgrade it to the full version or the next one so you have to pay the full/educational price for each major revision which works out significantly more expensive.

No free upgrade:

So CS4 extended full price: (when it was current) say £750
CS4-CS5 upgrade: £326
Total: £1100 or thereabouts

CS5 extended outright: £930

CS5 extended: educational edition £176

So you could buy the student versions of the next 4 versions before you spent more than buying the full version and then the upgrades.

And for most hobbyists the educational version would be all they need as they are not in it to make money....

Where do I sign up for this :)
