Well I'm generally not a baby about pain but I'm in what I would describe as incredible INCREDIBLE amounts of agony at the moment:mad: I had only one filling, which which was done about 7 years ago now and has decided to fall out of my mouth today, leaving the nerves just open to the elements.

Not been registered at a NHS dentist since having that filling done all those years ago as I'm A)Lazy, B)Pretty good at looking after my teeth and C)Lazy. Anyway as I can't get an appointment until the 26th I phoned up the emergency dentist who basically told me that they've just shut for the weekend (at 16:15...lazy *******!) so I'll just have to tough it out until Monday for pain relief treatment, unless the tooth is infected/bleeding/threatening to kill me. Brilliant.

So OCUK, my question to you is how much would I be expecting to pay to join a private dentist and have a simple filling replaced? Assuming that it is possible for me to just join one then receive emergency treatment at the weekend.

Thank you please.

When i was private last year, a filling cost me £46 and they quoted me about £650 for extra work that i needed Lol

Edit : If the filling is indeed really painful you will have the work done there and then. If its too bad they will simply remove it, but for quite a hefty price. Your looking at £70+ for an extraction .

Can't help with private dentists but to help in the meantime go buy some Orajel from the pharmacy. It's £5 but it's worth it:

(badly stolen pic apologies)

Costs lots.

Checkup: £38
Xray *2 (each side of mouth): £6.10
Filling1: £50
Filling2: £90
Hygenist: £36
Realising you have no choice: Priceless.

^ that stuff does not work.

If you want a temporary pain relief solution, get yourself some clove oil, can get it from boots for ~£5.

Orajel does work. It's one of the only things I've found that does. I've also heard good things about clove oil though.

I agree that the majority of tooth pain remedies don't work, but orajel does the job nicely.

This may be treading the fine line of medical advice but you can get temporary filling kits. They are included in first aid kits for people who are going to be away from civilisation for a long period of time. I'd guess you can get them from a chemist.

Could tide you over until the appointment on the 26th.

I'm on a pretty copious concoction of Orajel, clove oil and some heavy duty Tylenol I had left over from a trip to the states.

Prices aren't great eh but the only other option is a bottle of whiskey and a pair of pliers. No way I'm getting to Monday like this. The only thing worse is every woman I see telling me to stop being a little baby...something about childbirth blah blah blah.

Col_M, thanks but given that I tried to help a little cousin build a model plane last week and smashed it into a thousand pieces upon touching it, it's probably best left to the pro's!

Ah yes..that old chestnut.

You may want to grab some ibuprofen too - to help reducing swelling.

Don't think even a private dentist will see you out of hours and at the weekend.

They tend to farm out emergeny treatment to the local health authority

or

Get together and work on a roter with other dentists.

None of them want to go out and see someone unless it is really bad - broken face, cracked stuff and blood everywhere. They will tell you to take some painkillers and see your dentist as an emergency in the week.

My dentist was called on Christmas day by his friend asking for help. dentist told him to take painkillers and promptly went back to eating his roast turkey.

This, works very well.

You have my sympathy - I was in agony last Sunday and Monday due to tooth trouble, and was forced to go private in order to get seen. I've had to have an old filling replaced, root canal work (the nerve was dying which was the cause of all the pain) plus the inspection and X rays etc - it's cost me about £400 in all : (

The local health authority has a helpline for dental advice which I tried in my futile attempt to find an NHS dentist, but it permanently connected to an answerphone telling me to ring after 9am (not much help when you're ringing at 10 am). It may be worth trying NHS direct to see if they can help, you might have more luck than I did....

That's probably the same amount of work I'm looking at unfortunately then. Really not up for spending £400 so think I'll just try and tough it out until Monday and can get seen at this emergency clinic thingy.

It's quite annoying in a way, that what is generally a good NHS system is let down by this faff to get dental work done without being a "subscriber" to a dentist. I mean if I went out tonight and got well and truly leathered, I'd have ambulances fighting over who got to take me to hospital and put me in a bed for the night, yet I'm having my own fight to get this severe tooth pain sorted.

That'll be the crankyness setting in then:p

Look for a local hospital that does emergency dental care, most NHS authorities will have one, even if they simply patch you up so you're not in pain it's worth it. There more than likely will be an NHS dental/teaching hospital that can help you.

Yep already looked into it but they closed at 16:15 today until Monday. Don't qualify for further emergency help at the weekend as I was told on the phone that a missing filling wasn't serious enough.
