is this faster than a 5870?
At stock settings these are slower than 5870's, but will overclock further (with voltage tweaking) and hence should offer very simlar performance.

If you do not overclock get the 5870. If you do overclock it is down to personal preference (Nvidia vs ATI).

Overclocked, most voltage tweakable 5870's will hit 1000core (up from 850), but memory overclocks are very small. The voltage tweaked 470's should hit 740core (up from 607) and memory will hit around 1000MHz (uo from 835).

Actually you can't outright say GTX470 is slower than 5870, cause it is faster in some games (i.e. Dirt2), as fast in some games (Battlefield Bad Company 2), slower in some games (i.e. STALKER) at 1920x1200 16xAF,4xAA.

But the GTX470 will definitely has the high power consumption and heat disadvantage, but for it does handle tessellations better.

However, if game development base on dx11 is really heading the direction of using heavier tessellations for future game titles, then a GTX470 might have a slighty better longevity than the 5870 (of the person don't mind the extra power consumption and heat that is).

Price level both are at similar level...so it's pretty much down to personal preference in the end I guess.

They are at 8xAA.
I doubt many people would be using 8xAA (unless they go CF5850/CF5870) for BC2, so I think the 4xAA is more relevant I think...

Mind you that I'm not trying to argue GTX470 is faster than the HD5870 for BC2 at all, I only only saying they are around the same speed.
Also, at 8xAA, I'm pretty sure while the 5870 got higher average than GTX470, the minimum frame rate is likely to drop to bordline 25fps...or even the low end 20s. The GTX470/480 suffer less in minimum frame rate drop associated with AA application than the 5870, so they might actually able to maintain the minimum frame rate at 25~30fps in comparison.

*Note that the 5870 minimum frame rate dropped by 20fps with going from 0xAA to 4xAA, and the GTX470/480 only dropped by 12fps.

I think most reviews on the web out there only use the average frame rate as the figures for comparison, but they usually not bother to check how the minimum frame rates compare.

We could be all day posting benchmarks up giving different numbers from one to the other, I think we can safely say you won't be disappointed with a 5850/470/5870/480, all great cards and performance.

That I totally agree. I think too many people gotten too caught-up with the HD58xx vs GTX4x0 deal, and not realise that whether they are faster or slower, the GTX are pretty much on the similar performance level. But the disappoint thing is just the high price point of the GTX, as well as the heat. The cards themselves...they are not bad cards at all; just like how 5830 is not really a poor performing card...it was just badly priced and the preceived value is just poor.

The GTX need to drop in price like the 5830, otherwise it is just not as attractive when comparing to the 5850/5870.
