what is better? 2x 5850 crosfire. or a 5970?

also what would be better 3 x 5850 or 1x5970 and 1x5850

the reason i ask is im looking at a new build and i could buy quicker if i could get a 5850 first but dont want to waste money and prefer to save for month if 5970 better..

also what power needed for 3x 5850?

I'm in no way very knowledgeable, but as far as I know 2x 5850 beat 5970 anyday. I'm using 5970+5850 and it is performing really well tho, 32.5k on 3DMARK score. But I've seen one 5970 overclocked with water cooling get almost as high I think!

At stock I'd say a 5970 wins. Not so sure about the second question but I 'think' the 5970 + one 5850. The 5970 is basically two very down clocked 5870's. I would be thinking around 850 - 1kw for three of those cards, bearing in mind other power usage as well. See what other folk have to say.

Two 5850s probably would not beat a 5970. Two 5870s would beat a 5970 in *some* circumstances.

I would personally look at getting 2 X 5770 (around £230) and overclock them. They are quite capable together and excellent for the price.

Save the rest of your cash for a future graphics card when these start to struggle or better faster ones come onto the market!

the ATI 5970 is built useing 2 5870 GPU's with a clock of 725mhz

Raise this to stock 5870 clocks and its equal to 5870 crossfire

Add an extra 5850 and you get an extra 50% peformance boost!

Yea its true.. i have them

hmm the reason ii ask is im looking at eyefinity so thats why im looking at getting a good card.would 1 5850 run eyefinity?

For comparing 3x5850 against 5970+5850, I think the difference would be just some minor difference for frame rate in terms of numbers and figures, but in actual gaming experience you would most likely not notice the difference at all.

If taking power consumption, heat and airflow within the case in to consideration, the 5970+5850 is probably a better choice.
