920 vs 930 now prices are quite different

You MIGHT get a higher clock with the 930 under high end cooling, but you can pretty much guaranteed 4Ghz with a 920...is an extra not guaranteed 200-400Mhz worth the money, its up to you.

For £160 the 920 is the best pound/performance CPU on the market by a long way the only thing that comes close in my opinion is the 1055T.

At those price differences, it's kind of foolish to go for an 930 to be honest. Nowadays mobos as so easy to overclock that the extra multiplier comes down to pretty much nothing, and as previously mentioned, its largely the same chip clocked a bit higher anyway.

A lot of 930's are not clocking as well as most of the 920 Do's, if you check the threads. Better get a 920 DO and spend the extra quid on a better graphics card or SSD.

if you do go for a 930 check the batch number before you buy its very important...by all accounts avoid batch ending with the number 35 as these are apparently the worst batch of 930 made....people are only managing to hit 4ghz on water with temps in the mid 70s!Avoid this batch no matter at all costs!

Getting high end gfx and ssd anyway. Thanks for the heads up about clocking mind. Some articles suggest 930 is better but most go with the 920.

Can't see the 930 as worth it now. I'm guessing theyare trying to clear stockof 920s as when they were the same price you may aswell go for a 930.

Cheers mate, good advice. Hope those poor buggers get to the bottom of it!
Gonna go for the 920 myself :)

Possibly, although when you take motherboard costs into consideration it's not quite so clear cut.
Gotta say I'm finding the pricing on i7-920 rather strange, they dropped down by £40 in market where most component prices are static or rising (due to exchange rate). I mean the i5-750 has barely budged in price at all since launch, the i7-860 has gone up etc...

I think its because suppliers had some crazy cheap deals on the i7 920 to clear stock. Since the 920 is EOL and the 930 is taking up its old price point. I imagine that they won't be able to offer i7 chips at this price for long. Unfortunately, hugely increased RAM prices have balanced out the total system cost compared to last year.

You make a good point on the motherboards - you can get perfectly good motherboards that support the X6 AMDs for less than £60. If you want to run a 900 series i7 - you need to drop £140+. Tho to be fair, these X58 boards are chock full of features and overclock brilliantly - but there is not low-cost, reduced performance option on this platform.
