Macbook Pro - buy now, or wait?

You sure on that? I thought I'd read somewhere that the optical drive bay on the MBP was 9.5mm, and that 12.7mm/12.5mm drives wouldn't fit... but I can't remember where I read it or which generation MBP it was talking about...

I meant in the HDD bay (so you'd have the SSD in the ODD bay). It's correct that the 12.5mm ones won't fit in the ODD bay except on some older macs.

I'd guess so yeh, give them a quick ring!

Wow I must say apple customer service is excellent, spoke to an american guy on the phone, told him I was disappointed having spent nearly £1500 on a laptop to have it arrive in non-perfect condition. He's ordered me a priority replacement and offered me a good will gesture of £70 to spend on the apple store or a refund of £70 (once my replacement arrives, Mbp would have cost me £1357 (HE discount) incl HR AG screen and Iwork 09 if I take the refund).

On a side note nickthenorse, I have a LG Anti-glare panel (9CBB) and it is pretty stunning (no yellow tint etc.), Hoping my replacement has just as good a quality screen.

So I went to the Apple Store at Regent Street today after speaking to an Apple guy on the phone. He told me that with a HE discount, it would cost 850 or so for the 13" MBP. But I ended up coming out with the 15" basic model instead lol. There was no way I would have spent 1499 on it, but with the HE discount, it cost 1275!

I also got the 3-year AppleCare for 60 quid, so fantastic bargain there. I've had laptops before such as from Dell where some technical issue would typically arise AFTER my 1 year warranty runs out, so for 60 it's definitely worth it for me (20 quid a year? sure!).

The guy at the store was so helpful and patient, because I kept changing my mind between the 13" and 15". I tried to weigh up paying an extra 400 quid or so, so I quickly checked some benchmark comparisons of the C2D vs i5, nVidia 320M vs nVidia 330M GT, bigger screen (took me a while to find a 13" beside a 15" for easy visual comparison). I also liked that the 15" has the graphics switching thing, and overall it will last me the 3+ I expect it to serve me comfortably.

The only thing that slightly bugs me though is the speakers on the side of the 15". It just doesn't look right lol. Kinda makes it look cheaper than the 13" imo!

On the way back home, I was like a walking white Apple flashy bag. I asked if they had some other more discreet bag, but they didn't. So I asked them to put it into a smaller bag before putting it into a bigger bag, so that the MBP box wouldn't peek through as much.

Pics inc once I've had some dinner because I haven't eaten all day and have been relying on my Apple excitement to get me through the day.

Whenever I'm in the Apple store I have to hold myself back from the new MBPs!

That's what I thought when in NYC I walked out of the store with my MBP, except that was just the box with handle - no bag.

And with the iPhone 3G the bag was stupidly obvious, so when I got my 3GS at launch I took a bag-for-life with me as walking around with a bag that reads "got it" just didn't seem very sensible!

They must ship them differently to the none apple stores as mine came in a brown box with the macbook pro box inside that.

BTW if you want to attach a none apple keyboard and have the right character map let me know, after some hunting I found the right keyboard map...

Back when I were a lad, you could buy an Apple iPhone 3GS 32GB and happily display the bag to strangers on the way back to your house. Which you left unlocked.

Here we go:

Beside my old Toshiba Satellite M115-S3094 which I bought in the States 3 years ago. That's gonna be formatted and then given to my mum.

Man, I love this smell that brand new Apple products give out lol.

Meh We always wrap items in black shrink wrap plastic if the customer doesn't want the bag on show, poor show at regent :p but then I work in manchester so that may explain it :D

Hmm only 2 USB ports on the left and they are right alongside each other! My USB stick is quite a chunky plastic piece, so I can't plug that in and something else at the same time, like my Razor DeathAdder :(

I've just ran WoW for about 5 mins, and my MBP is pretty hot underneath at the back left! I have a feeling this may be a bit uncomfortable on my thighs if I run a game while sitting in bed or something. Someone mentioned about this earlier too.

Incase anyone is wondering on an example of the battery life, I'm sat here in bed with half brightness with the keyboard lit on 1 bar, browsing the internet, and with the battery indicator at 97% with 7 hours to go.

Can anyone recommend a keyboard protector, a thin sleeve like thing that goes on top of the keyboard as I'm pretty paranoid about getting dirt on it lol. I was thinking the Moshi Clearguard one from the Apple stores themselves. Costs about £22. Any advice please?

Has anyone used the 330M in the 15" i5 models with any 3D applications yet? I'm thinking of getting one but I need a little reassurance as to how it would handle moderate 3D usage - mainly work in Maya or 3DS Max (not massive scenes and little rendering) when I don't have access to my main desktop. Cheers.

For those of you with 15"ers (MBPs, that is) can you pop over to this macrumors thread and post with your panel details? As you may or may not know Apple uses various panel manufacturers in their products at any one time - the one you end up with in your computer depends on stock levels and availability.

I've got the 15" High res anti glare and I'm not too impressed by the screen if I have to be honest, seems to have quite uneven backlighting and the bottom of the screen is rather warm colour wise (which means the bottom of the screen appears yellowey on a white background and makes black text look ever so slightly brown).
