Get your arse over to Tesco, they've got their ownbrand 3L bottles on BOGOF. £2.53 i think it is. No filtering, no fuss, just pop the lid and straight in the tank.

Works out to 42p/L. **** yeah :D

Do you use more than 2,500L in a rolling 12 month period? No? Then there is no duty to pay.

Next question? ;)

edit, i'll assume the ginger headed stepchild position :(

Really? I thought it was paid on everything. You must have got some funny looks at the checkout - I'd have been tempted to put a big bag of chips and some mars bars in the trolley too

Used to be.

Initially the duty rate for biofuels was 30ish p/l, then R&C reviewed their "understanding" of the law (the law didn't actually change) and the duty rate for some biofuels (pure veg for instance) went up to 50ish p/l.

So after several thousand people were sending in payments of £1/month to cover the duty on the 2 litres of veg they'd used that month R&C realised they were actually losing money on the process.

So they scrapped duty payments for low volume home users. If you're a business, you pay the duty, if you use over 2,500l/12months you pay the duty (on ALL the fuel, not just the 2,500+), if you sell the fuel, you pay the duty. If you're an individual with no commercial interest, you don't. win :)

Checkout staff didn't bat an eyelid. After i carefully ignored the "2 offers per customer" sign, i went to the self serve lane. Where the helpful assistant put it all through on the "multiple item" screen. :D

Is there any process to doing this ?

Yup, it's called "pouring" :D

or just straight into the tank and away ya go?

Having the right fuel pump is ESSENTIAL. If you've got a mechanical Bosch (or Bosch copy Zexel, etc) fine, if you've got a mechanical Lucas, Rotodiesel, etc or a modern common rail system, run for the hills.

also is it legal ? :p

Nope, in fact i've already got my false passport and am about to leave the country.

What sort of MPG do you get on that stuff? Also, is it not cheaper to buy it in drums from Costco et al?

Minute reduction in MPG (veg has a slightly lower cetane value than pump diesel)

Cash & carry outlets are still around 70-75p/l, this stuff is normally 84p/l, but the BOGOF makes it uber cheap.

Aren't you supposed to put a bottle of White Spirit in to boost the cetane rating and prevent waxing in winter.

Edit:
Buying 4 bottles, once a day wouldn't be breaking the 2 offers rule. Each day on your way home from work buy 4 bottles and one vegetable, try and hit the same cashier each day.

No, That Top Gear article was so full of BS it's unreal. Once you add white spirit you can't put it in your tank. White spirit is a "tied" fuel, it's duty free but there is no option to pay duty on it either. Totally illegal for use in a road engine. And it's cheaper to use petrol anyway.

You need something like "vegiboost" to lift the cetane rating a bit and that's only needed if you lower it by adding petrol. And you only need to add petrol in a depths of winter when the fuel is starting to gel in your tank (needs to be around -5 for this) Although some people do add a bit of petrol all year around, just to thin out the fuel (which is pointless if you're running a Bosch unit as it's quite happy with pretty much anything)
