I moved up to Nottingham at the end of last year principally because of my then GF, but we broke up. I don't really like the place. I don't know anyone up here and its quite far from my friends/familys/roots (London and Bristol). Okay, I haven't really given the place a chance, or put much effort into meeting people as I've been feeling a bit sorry for myself, but Nots seems a bit...well, I dunno...meh.

I absolutely love Bristol and the SW and the people there but I have previously struggled to find the right job in my industry sector there.

The thing is, I'm at the stage in my life where I feel I need to become more responsible, sensible and settle down in a nice peaceful life, do more constructive things, and put down some roots - I was bit wild and reckless when I was younger (blew money like you wouldn't believe, quit good jobs to go travelling on a whim...more than once, worked across the UK, was out and about too much for my own good, etc etc).

So although I'm in a fairly well paid industry, I don't really have the money to show for it due to past indiscretions. I'm also fed up of the job which is stressful and doesn't motivate me anymore as I feel I've done everything there is do and worked for every type of organisation there is in this sector.

The thing is, property is cheap up in Nottingham. At a stretch, I can get a mortgage for a 2 bedroomed flat/house in an okay area in Notts. Whereas for a 2 bedroom flat in the area I would prefer to live in Bristol (Clifton/Redland/Cotham), I'm looking at £250k+ and wouldn't be able to get that sort of mortgage in a million years.

Should I be sensible and look to get on property ladder in Notts and stick it out in a place I don't really and in a job I don't really like (but at least get some cash together and some equity), or throw caution to the wind (even though they say madness is doing the same thing again and gain and expecting different results) and look to head back to Bris, which is likely to put my house plans on hold for several years, and also possibly look for change of career?

I know most of you are from the younger crowd, but does anyone have any advice or experiences which would be willing to share?

250k+ for a 2 bed flat? Are you having a ******* laugh?!?!?

I wouldn't even consider that on principle, tbh.

Nottingham is fine if you stick to the right areas. Plenty of good, and plenty of bad, just like anywhere.

Unfortunately, I live around the "bad", but if you're interested in movies, games, booze, books etc. then you're more than welcome to get to know me and the mrs. :)

ye great southern wuss..

There's nowt wrong wit nottingham that a wreckin' ball wouldn't fix.

Seriously though, its up to you, sounds as if you are trying to convince yourself to leave though, which is a shame, it can be a great place, and there's plenty of us around here that have lived here for a good long while.

I quite enjoyed visiting nottingham when i was up that way (mind you I was living in Lincoln at the time, so anything was a step up!). Bristol in the summer is hard to beat though. And I may be slightly biased ;)

wheres the bad you live in?

i grew up on snapewood estate in bulwell which should have a pretty bad rep these days as most of the criminal element in bulwell at the time i lived there either lived near newmarket road or up the top of snapewood estate where i lived.

it used to have a massive problem of joyriding the locals would have atleast one stolen car a night and i believe bulwell shops were probaly one of the first in the country to have shutters because they got ram raided so much even though theres a small police station 60seconds away.

Nottingham isn't up north, it's the Midlands :p

If you come out of Bristol a bit towards the South/South West property prices aren't so bad atm and its a nice area to live with relatively easy access to Bristol for working, etc.

Follow your heart. I'm surprised you've found a job in Nottingham that you couldn't get in Bristol though- what industry do you work in?
