I currently play Battlefield Bad Company 2, GTA4 and Grid at 1920x1200 on a single 24", and hoping to get a few newer games soon so generally want to keep my system uptodate. I currently have the following;

  • PNY 8800GT 512mb at stock
  • E8400 @ 3.8ghz Corsair H50
  • Corsair 4GB XMS2 Dominator PC6400 (2x2)
  • Corsair 520w psu modular (can't remember model)
  • Abit IP35 Pro XE
  • all in a Fractal Design Define R2 case with good air flow
I would firstly like to upgrade the graphics card within a budget of around £100-150. I'll then be upgrading the rest of my system as and when required, so I need a card which I can 'build my upgrade around' comfortably, so compatibility with newer parts as well as my current parts is crucial. I'd rather not have to upgrade the card again once I decide the other parts need upgrading..

For 100-150 It has to be a 5770 or a 5830 really, doesn't it? Escpecially since BFBC2 uses DX11.
 
I'm not too hot on which manufacturers cards perform better and which to avoid, so specifics would be awesome :) And how much of an increase in performance should I expect? My last upgrade was from 6600GT -> 8800GT and that was a biggun :D
 
5770 or 5830... If you can maybe wait a little while longer for prices to come down (god knows if that'll happen soon though) or get a bit more cash together, a 5850 will be a MASSIVE upgrade for you :)

I went from 7900GT - 4870 (similar to 5770), so yeah... pretty snazzy :P
 
+1 for 5770.

There should be a big sticky somewhere that says that for £100-£150, you should buy a 5770 :).

I wouldnt do that right now, I'd still rather buy two 5770s for the price of one 5850 :).
 
Thanks a lot for the input. Is there a particular 5770 which is in the sweet spot for silence and power? I have a pretty silent system at the moment, the 8800GT is the loudest component and I wouldn't want a new card AS loud or loudER if possible. Are there any aftermarket coolers worth looking at to achieve this?
