Sprung a Big leak, help!!

Cut long story short, my outlet pipe came completly lose from my pump and my loop drained. It became lose on power up and managed to cut the power quickly. Theres was some fluid on the gc pcb and on the psu cover. On the psu it doesn't look like its ingressed into the actual cables or box. Strange it happened as the barbs were on snuggly, 7/16 tubing over 1/2 barbs. Im using jubile clips from now on.

My question is, how to spot damage on my hardware?


I have a Asus P6X58D-E,920 and some ocz ram on the way, should cure by current watery mood:p
 
Get it in a tray or box coated in anti-static material and put in a warm, dry place. Water or liquids can cause no damage unless a current is passed though it. Just give it a wipe with some cotton cloth and leave to dry.
 
just to be on the safe side, always use jubilee clips or similar - it can save an expensive disaster!

i've lost a mobo (and nearly a soundcard + gpu) from a dodgy o-ring on a mosfet block. my own fault really as i should've inspected them 1st.

now i put ptfe tape on the threads and leave o-rings on just to be extra safe! some might say that's pointless, but it's not worth the risk imo.

The thing about using 7/16 on 1/2 is that you really need to make sure it's on properly to begin with, otherwise it does have a tendancy to squirm off.
What I like to do is heat up some distilled water and warm up the end of the tubing, this will allow the tube to be effectivly molded over the barbs to ensure the best seal possible.

not true at all.

comp fittings can (and do) leak. yes, they may hold the tube on better, but you can still experience leaks with them.

barbs, with jubilee clips are as good a seal as you can get imo
 
Also water-cooling is best left on permanently. Pressure stabilises. If you're constantly turning your computer on and off (if you Fold you'll never turn it off; another good reason for Folding) you can get things like this happening.

So if the computer will not be left running, use clips.

Thanks for the replies guys. Would shorts caused by the water leave any marks, burnt marks on the pcb of mobo or gc? So far haven't noticedany marks on pcb but then again haven't tested any of the kit. I would use compression fittings but they are expensive so maybe in the furture.
 
I've used barbs and jubilee clips to secure my tubing. Haven't had a leak in a year where the barb on my CPU block had losened! Almost lost a mobo and graphics card but the fluid I'm using is non-conductive... apparnetly!
 
yeah, if there's a short you'll most likely have a burn, and maybe a small fire.

when my mobo went, a capacitor between 2 pci-e slots had a black scorch, as did the gpu and soundcard straddling it.

also, you'll smell a nasty burning smell :D

No signs of that which is very good. Hooked up the psu to a fan and worked flawlessly. Getting my 4890 tested today and hard drives. So far the leak has been kind.
 
1/2 barbs and the pump is dc10w. I don't think it got run dry as there was still fluid in the res, its a xspc bay res 1. Tonite i'll test the pump. So far ive been lucky.
 
back when watercooling was made out of fish tank pumps, car heater matrixs and central heating pipework i used to coat any PCB in my setup with HPA conformal coating to ensure it was waterproof (it also glowed slightly under uv light) does no-one do this anymore?

....feel old now

got one of these setups on top of a cupboard haha,cant bring my self to get rid.think its an h30 hydor,i/2 inch,with heater core.just replace cpu block and itll be good to go again.

both barbs and compression fittings are good when used correctly.allways fit clips and it will be fine. ive been watercooling since my nf7 days
 
actually water can leave conductive deposits when it drys why u think so many mobiles die when they get dropped down the pan lol

good way of testing if ur liquid is non conductive is to get a multimeter put it on the diode/cpc test and stick prongs in said liquid if it bleeps its conductive

u could also use some wire 12v dc square batt and a 12v dc lamp to do the same

Isn't it common sense to buy a non-conductive liquid for your rig ? I mean, isn't it the industry standard by now ? If not, it should be. :rolleyes:
