Looking for something different. Desire or HD2?

I currently have a 3GS, but i'm looking to move away from apple now and try something different. The HD2 looks great and i love the screen size, but i know the majority of people will argue the Desire has the superior OS and slightly superior hardware. So which would you recommend? or are they both just as good as each other? I need a phone with a good reliable gps for turn by turn navigation, the usually stuff like twitter, facebook, ebay, etc, a lot of web browsing (this is where the size of the hd2 comes in i thought) and third party apps are also a must having been tied up with itunes for so long...

Let me know your opinions :)

The hd2 is great for the stuff you have mentioned. The winmo facebook app isnt great, but with the large screen its better to just go via the browser.

I use iGo 8 on mine and it has been brilliant.

The only thing that I feel let down with is apps. Sure there are some great ones if you look hard enough but a lot are buggy, dont work properly/require confusing configuring.

If android is ported to the hd2 I will be excited to try it out.
 
Sounds like the Desire is what your after...it has free naviagtion courtesy of google maps now. Also incorporates Twitter, Facebook within the HTC Sense overlay.

The screen isnt as big as the HD2 but after using my dads HD2...i have to say it isnt all that...not very pocketable and the screen res isnt that great...the Desire uses a 3.7" AMOLED screen which is simply superb...hell even my dad is now selling the HD2 to get the Desire...plus the biggest plus point for the Desire is the OS it runs on...Winmo which the HD2 runs on is an absolute dog of an OS...

The Desire and HD2 have the same screen resolution...

OP, either will probably do you well, how about looking at the X10, it has a screen in between the Desire and the HD2.

Oh didnt realise that they did....but compared to the Desire the HD2 is pretty washed out...i didnt find it very nice to look at...but thats down to the AMOLED i guess.

Wouldnt suggest the X10 as it runs an older version of Android and no one really knows when it will be getting the 2.1 update meanwhile the 2.2 update is due out soon.
 
I've recently moved from a WinMo (5.something) to Android on the Desire and it's like night and day. I'd recommend the Desire.
 
The desire is BY FAR the better phone - I use the desire ROM on my nexus one and its fantastic - a work colleague has a desire and its a really nice experience, plus SENSEUI is what android SHOULD be, so some nice work from HTC there.

My advise would be to try both and see which fits you the best, no real contest for me though, android all the way.
 
Out the box, the Desire will look and perform better, the HD2 really needs custom ROMs to shine, so if you don't want to go down that route, the Desire is a better choice.

I still love my HD2 mind.

I can't see the X10 having 1.6 for very long. I assume the Android "modding" scene is as alive as the XDA scene, in which case I wouldn't be suprised if we don't have Sense on the X10 or the time/mediascape UI of the X10 updated to 2.1.

I'm due an upgrade, probably now actually but I'd rather save money and go sim free at the moment. In a couple of months however i'll see if they have modded the X10 software as IMO it's got much nicer hardware.

why ? what does 1.6 miss out on ? a bit of eye candy and thats it

its the top selling phone EVER in japan. and not for no reason.

x10 was rooted at the weekend. by end of week people have been promising easier and free ways to root. as soon as that happens i imagine 2.1 will be here straight away for anyone who cares enough

Unfortunately there are people out there who are only developing for version 2.x so newer firmware would be a welcome addition surely?
 
Yeh i'm seriously considering the desire right now just for the OS however the styling and size (i wont have an issue with this, its a preference) of the hd2 i still find really appealing. Common sense is telling me desire though...

EDIT: I've also heard amoled screens are shocking with screen glare, etc. Is this true?

I went from the HD2 to the Desire.

The HD2 is probably better, the OS on the Desire is better however the screen on the HD2 is much better. its really hard to see the Desire screen in the sun.

I'm unfortunately still tied to an o2 contract mate, so only considering currently unlocked or o2 network phones.
