Hes your average 45 year old with wife and 2 children (under 10). HAS to be an estate. Doesnt care about performance. Needs good fuel economy. His mate has a 320D which he likes (tho his mate claims he gets 55mpg, which I think is bollozzzzz 45mpg tops). Budget 12-15k.

320d
A4 2.0 tdi

With kids and estate requirement in mind I recently bought my E61. Delighted with it and that bit more room for kids, dogs and other family rubbish than a 3 series. Mine was well within that budget and 40k miles from late 2005.

Accord - reliable diesels, pretty "meh" but they're well specced

A 320d will do 55mpg on a good motorway run, as will similar sized diesels - you'll be lucky to average that though!

I had a 140 tdi passat 2007 saloon and got 42/43mpg on teh motorway at approx 70mph, that was mmy reason behind not beliving it. Ill look at accords

Think it was broken - my old 130 Mondeo would average 40~45 with a combination of town driving, motorways, A roads without even trying - 55mpg on a long run was possible with a bit of effort

he he. Company car (tho I did look after it as was going to buy off comp). However now got a roco petrol so never did buy it! That was average over 80k and 3 years.

My dad's 320d coupe returned 55-60mpg on a daily basis, 20 mile commute to work (15 miles motorway, 5 miles country roads) and on a good motorway run would get over 60 easily. He didn't exactly drive like miss daisy either.

A E90 320D (as it will be in that budget) will very easily get 55MPG without trying too hard on a mix or built up areas and motorways.
