Attitude of the public to bodybuilders

It would be interesting to know what non-body builders think of body-builders when they are not in the gym but let's say walking around town etc?

Also, I would like to ask the other bodybuilders-as opposed to myself, what sort of grief they get from the public when out and about doing ordinary day-to-day things. An example I can give is one in which sometimes you'll get the "body-builders nod": an expression of crikey your big mate-I wouldn't like to bump in to you on a dark night etc: usually from doormen and local hardmen on the one hand, and on the other you sometimes get the local drunken morons shouting insults like "arn't you liccle" out of jealousy and the primal urge to cause some bother. Obviously I am not "liccle" but do like to cover up when nine times out of ten it is likely to lead to trouble.

As a non body builder I think most people generalise them as chavs or something. Most of the one's I serve at work are really nice and easy going guys. It's the small people that always give it large.

I have a lot of respect for them given how much work they put in to look like that.

I personally think IDIOT. I go to the gym most days and laugh at the meatheads.. Not too loud mind...cos if they hear, they'd rip my arms out of their very sockets.

The problem i have with most body builders is they are too into themselves, a little like a lady with huge fake ****. Most women think its not very nice and they HAVE to be on the juice to get that size. So it's not eactly real anyways. A bit like silicone frup pennies. I think a well defined person is a lot more appealing to a woman than a spotty backed ripped testosteroned **** who thinks he looks the bomb. Yeah maybe to some other testosteroned delusional buffoon. But not to anyone else.. AND stop wearing those fleck paint tracksuit bottoms you homo's.

I'm not sure if I would be regarded as your stereotype 'bodybuilder' - those of you who have seen my images in the bodybuilding picture thread can say? But participating in the sport myself I have a huge deal of respect for anyone who gets massive(chav or not) naturally(you can tell).

I, personally really enjoy it. Started out vanity related but has since grew into a love of lifting and a of course a hobby.

Peoples attitudes towards me? I don't get any attitude, I've found unlike a lot of people that I never get hassled in bars or at gigs, never any bother. If people annoy me, they generally back down instantly when I start throwing a strop and of course, you get the stares a lot(especially in town or in restaurants) which I get quite shy about but at the same time, it's nice to be noticed. The comments at work are funny too, for example "your guns just walked out the door before you did there". :D

The stereotype bodybuilder is bull ****, steroid popping, acne riddled, meat head - You don't have to be massive to be a bodybuilder, it's a sport, get over it.

Oh man, I can't believe anyone would be so sad as to post in that thread.. I dare not take a look in there incase anyone spots me.

Hey each their own and all.. But to think a bunch of computer hobbists are going to admire a load of pics in a thread and the posters are out there looking for compliments, just about sums up body builders.

Nuff said.

Excessively vain and narcissistic expecially if tanned up, and ultimately very gay.

It depends how far it has been taken though - if you for example looked something like Jonny wilkinson, then it is obvious you do weights, but you would probably be on the edge of "normal".

It depends on the clothes you wear as well, skin tight v necks etc = totally gay!

You're going to upset quite a few people with that.

Posting pics in that thread is not gay or vain (ok, some of it is a bit) but more a way to get encouragement and feedback. Any form of exercise is hard work and seeing improvement isn't an overnight thing. If you stick with it long enough to see results you get a great sense of achievement and WANT to share it with others in the same boat. It feels great that you've put in all this hard work and have fruit to show for it.

It's sad that men wanting to be men, to lift heavy things and brag about it to others, are now branded gay and vain, when the skinny-jean-and-cardigan guys are running around like a bunch of raving homos like it's normal. Masculinity is going down the toilet, we're all turning into girls.

Your are obviously very mis-informed.

Anybody that has the self respect & determination to look after themselves has more worth than you.

I'm sure you have hobbies of which anybody on this forum could call pointless and be incredibly narrow minded towards.

I don't deny the sterotypical bodybuilder exists and is common but every sport or hobby has it's *********.

I wouldn't class myself as 'big' but big enough to get noticed and for the odd idiot to try something. Generally most of the time it acts like a deterrent. When I'm on a night out the last thing I want to do is fight.

Bodybuilding is one of those things, until you've actually tried it and stuck at and realised how incredibly difficult, phsyically and mentally taxing it is and also how genetically gifted professional bodybuilders are you just wont understand.

You are however entitled to your opinion and this is a discussion forum. But don't expect not to recieve a verbal lashing if you wish to **** on other peoples chips.

As for what I think of other bodybuilders walking around town I think the only think I look at is their proportioning as excessively bad proportioning makes you look like a complete fool.

Some would think it's equally sad that you have your computer specs in your signature for everyone to see

Also here's a quote by Socrates...

No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training...what a disgrace it is for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable

Sad? Coming from a man who has computer specifications in his signature? As you said, each to their oh, eh?

We're not all computer enthusiasts and I think you'll find it's hardly a bunch of posters looking for compliments - the large majority being well educated and highly knowledgeable in the areas of sports and nutrition.

You have been grossly misinformed. How could it not be real? Muscle is muscle, and the bigger you are the more effort it has taken to get there, there's nothing more real than that.

The thread is in the Sports section of the forum, not in the CPU section or something, we aren't looking for attention at all, we have a small group of guys here who do lift and we keep to ourselves. You're the one who's come in here sticking your nose in. Just about sums up nerdy misanthropic reclusive PC enthusiasts.

I have no problems with people weight lifting.

As long as they 'YOU' keep to your self and dont 'strut' around in tight tops. At my local gym where I dont go to much as the weather's alittle warmer, theres a few guys wearing SKINS tops. Just to show there muscles. I should say to them that its for recovery you baffons. Not looking in to the mirror while at the gym.

Really PI***s me off.

Ummm hello? What roids have you been on? Posting computer specs and posting a picture of yourself on a hey look at me thread are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS PAL !

I have self respect for myself, i work out and probably train harder than 99% than the rest of the population.. The difference is I look normal to everyone else.. I do not need the attention for people to look twice at my biceps.. As I said each to their own.. I personally think its very sad for a man to want that kind of attention.. Especially as every lady I've ever been with has always expressed their dislike for body builders.. Yeah we all want to be appealing to the other sex, which is why most people work out, as well as having the fitness benifets. The difference is with a body builder he takes it too far, becomes delusional thinks it's what every man wants to look like and what every girl wants.. Except that is so far from the truth.. The only people that think body buidlers look good are GUESS WHAT? Body buidlers.. go figure?
