is there such a thing? The speakers are naff at higher volumes. Reading around people suggest just upgrading the speakers to better quality ones. Any budget recommendations please? I'm not after mega volumes just a decent little upgrade is all

No, there is no cheap upgrade to the HK system and it isnt even that good anyway.

Oh wait do you mean an upgrade FROM HK? Do you already have HK?

I had HK in the two E46s I had and I thought it was fantastic!

They really are not that bad ime, but are well below par when compared with Audi BOSE systems, or the Mercedes implementation of HK kit. Its not bad enough that i'd be bothered with an upgrade.

At normal volume I think it does sound good but if a nice song comes on the radio and you want to blast it for a bit, the speakers sound very harsh and lack clarity and, well, hurt my ears. I've fiddled with the treble but it doesn't help much.

Also a little anoying is how the volume slightly adjusts itself, which is good if at speed but not when you are in slow stop start traffic, is this normal? I've disabled the HK spatial effects from the button in the console and still testing to see if it still happens.

Also when people are in the car and say oooh HK it must be good, crank it up a bit, it's kind of embarrasing when I know it doesn't sound as top quality as it could. It's like all the HK badges etc look good but don't produce the goods imho :(

I've heard good things about the Hk from other bmw forums, its all relative i guess.

Have anyone actually experineced a "Branded" car audio system that they were genuinely impressed with?

HK Logic 7 system in high end Mercs is very good. The Naim audio 13.2 system in the Bentley Flying Spur/GT/GTC etc is more than very good, its outstanding.

Personally I've never been too impressed by the Naim System, but then again I'm far from an audiophile :).

If it's Naim, I'd assume it to be fantastic, going by their home audio gear. In the same way I'd assume a HK or BOSE system to be overpriced, very mediocre and playing on the brand name.

What is there not to be impressed by? Its incredible for a factory fit car system!

Don't get me wrong, The clarity is awesome (You'll go deaf long before you get any distortion), but I have to say that I was disappointed with the lack of any real low down "punch" with some of the DSP profiles (Most memorably the "Naim audiophile" one) making music sound FAR too tinny for my tastes.

Even though I'm not someone who particularly likes "doof, doof, doof" bass, I do like to 'feel' my music and for some reason I was expecting the Naim system to shake some of my internal organs loose.
