I was speaking to a volcanologist last week who'd been working on this. He was under the impression Eyjafjallajökull could continue for ages, even years and there was better than evens chance of Katla erupting within a year, with approximately 10-fold magnitude but more explosive and shorter lived.

In my opinion people should have re-evaluated their future plans to fly by now. European and especially UK aviation has changed. There's no excuse for being surprised or 'caught out'.
