This is really for my dad as he has just got rid of Sky because he doesn't want to waste money on something he hardly watches.

Basically he can get Freeview already from the tuner built into his TV and it works fine but he misses the recording facility of his favourite programs while he is at work which he used to have through his Sky box. So.. he needs something like a Freeview recorder box but also expressed his desire for the free to air HD channels like ITV HD.

The problem is, as you have probably already noticed, is that there don't seem to be any Freeview HD recorders only standard definition ones. The only thing I can find at the moment for him are Freeview HD boxes without the recording facility and to be quite honest they are a bit of a rip off at the moment - considering he can get a standard definition freeview recorder for the same price.

I know there is Freesat which might be an option for him but I've heard there isn't as many channels and they are really expensive for the hd recorders.

So if anyone could offer some advice, it would be much appreciated.

Freesat's got more channels than Freeview. It's about £200-£250 for the Humax Foxsat DVR which is supposedly the best.

Humax do a freeview HD recorder I think....

*not available yet, coming soon*

You get 5.1 sound on freesat, the boxes are available, and if he has coverage like we do loads more channels. we have 6 (yes that's one more than 5 and one less than 7) channels available on freeview.

I think my dad wants to keep it below £200 if possible and I've heard that Freesat doesn't get the Virgin 1 channel? My dad watches that channel a lot and I doubt he'd want to go without it when changing to Freesat.

Freesat boxes do seem to be more available in choice over Freeview HD but as said above I don't think my dad would want to pay higher than £200 and I doubt he would go without Virgin 1.
 
humax freeview dtr's are amongst the best, and he'd be able to get one for under £200 easily. there is a factory humax outlet, can't remember the url of hand though

Eugh, I really want to see that having seen so many adverts, but I also know it will consist of a load of naked blokes and a couple of fat old naked women...:eek::(

Does anyone know anything about these freesat cards you can put into your existing Sky box? This might be quite useful in saving my dad some cash but the other question would be: does it still allow you to use the recording facility from the sky box?
 
freesat cards from sky are different, asfaik you need to pay £10 a month to record. if you don't pay your sky bill you can't record, or even play back recordings
