Main reason I'm interested in doing this is it is one of the few "free"* volunteer opportunities. That along with the location and what you'll be doing makes it quite interesting.
*By free I mean only really paying for transport (flights and transport to the location), most, even the supposed cheap ones, charge a fortune to do anything, especially if you're intersted in doing it for a month.
funny i was just talking to a guy at work about this today, i applied to do this in 97 was all set to go then i got offered a job that i didnt want to refuse...
If i remeber correctly, you pay for your flight, your working for the US gov, and if you need any special training ( rifle, helicopter crash survival etc ) they give you it, before you start your placement. i.e. if your in bear country and you need to carry a rifle they will train you, if you need to take a heli to the area your working in, they will give you survival training for crashes etc.
Thanks, that looks interesting, although probably a little tight as I'm hopefully doing a masters mid september.
I had seen something similar, where you got paid a stipend to do similar things, but only found out about it a couple of days before it finished, which was a bummer as you had to get a J1 visa before applying...
I had hoped to have a job by this point which is why I didn't apply for these things before now...
