Death Star or Mount Doom, it depends on the day.
:(

It just stays on stand by. I keep switching it off by the wall and back on again but its having none off it. I can hear it reving up inside, but it doesnt do anything. And the rare occasion it does come on, it doesn't have the Sky + features. Any ideas?

At a complete and utter guess based on what our box did, the hard disk is dead.

If so, it's simple to swap it for another one :).

Why is it a normal hard disk???

Yeah, a Sky+ box uses an IDE HDD, a Sky HD box uses a SATA HDD.

Replace the HDD with anyone you have around, if it boots up all is good.

Carry out a full system reset (quickly press: [services] 4, 0, 1 [select] and choose option 8) and the replacement drive will be initialised.

You will loose any recorded programs on your old disk though, unless you use a program to transfer them.

Ask them if they will give you a free replacement (or you will cancel), or ask them about what deals they can offer if you upgrade to Sky HD? If they wont play ball, speak with the cancellation team, and say you will stay if they fix/replace your box.

I have managed to get my Sky box to stay on by disabling the standbye. But I have lost all my Sky+ features. :-(

My friend has a spare Sky+ box as when he upgraded to HD. I don't want to upgrade to SkyHD TBH, its not worth the extra money. I get a good picture with what I have got.

Is the HD that easy to replace, is it as simple as a computer? Can you put any size HD in the box and it will work???

Take the drive from his box, put it into your box and do a full system reset.

It's a standard IDE HDD, just undo the case screws, pop out old drive, put in new drive, turn on unit, let it boot, then [services] 4, 0, 1 [select] and choose option 8.

The other option would be to use his box with your card, but you would have to ring up sky to pair the card to the box.
