Hey guys, my step-dad is quite a big man (fat in other words) and he wants to lose weight but the problem is he has issues with his knee and can't walk for a period of time.

Obviously cardio and walking/running is the best way to lose weight (apart from diet) and because of his knee this is more or less out of the question

are there any exercises he can do that doesn't involve using his legs that he can do to lose weight?

of course there is weight lifting, but that isnt really a cardiovascular activity.

Can anyone suggest anything, he would rather not go to the gym.

Thanks :)

If he is truly as fat as you say, he won't even need to exercise to start his weight loss off, he can lose a lot from diet alone, and maybe when he doesn't weigh as much he can get a knee brace so he can start light exercises when his knee isn't under so much weight pressure.

My local gym has a machine that works similar to a stationary bike however instead of using your legs you used your hands.

Similar to that, could be expensive-ish though

sorry he said he would rather do it from home, so swimming is out :) - i know this seems like he is not too enthusiastic about it, but he doesnt like going to these places by himself :)

Aedus, yes, very good idea

Why not go with him then? I find the gym/pool a much better place to be when i'm with someone. Gets a bit lonely on your own. :(

A celebrity fitness video (:p) would probably be useful, can just stand there then and doesn't need to do too much stepping about?
